Chesapeake Regional Airport (KCPK) is a public-use general aviation airport in the city of Chesapeake, Virginia, about 12 nautical miles south of downtown Norfolk. Owned by the Chesapeake Airport Authority, it offers a quieter alternative to the region's larger commercial fields while still providing an ILS-equipped runway for instrument approaches. It serves as a convenient stopping point on the east coast for business and private pilots operating in the Hampton Roads area.

Overview

Chesapeake Regional Airport lies in the city of Chesapeake, Virginia, within easy reach of Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach, and serves the wider Hampton Roads region. It is owned and operated by the Chesapeake Airport Authority, with Horizon Aviation based on the field as the fixed-base operator. For a simulator pilot the airport is a useful, uncomplicated GA destination close to the busier Norfolk airspace, offering a single instrument-capable runway and straightforward visual approaches from the surrounding low-lying Virginia coastal plain.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits roughly 12 nautical miles south of Norfolk's central business district, close to Portsmouth and Virginia Beach, placing it near the edge of the Norfolk terminal airspace. Traffic in the vicinity is worked by Norfolk Approach/Departure on the airport's published A/D frequency. Coordinates are 36.6656 N, 76.3207 W, with a field elevation of 16 feet.

Runways

Chesapeake Regional has a single physical runway, 05/23, 5,495 feet long, of hard surface construction and lit for night operations. An ILS is provided to runway 05.

Radio & Navigation

The airport's A/D frequency, worked by Norfolk Approach/Departure, is 118.9 MHz. Weather information is available on AWOS at 123.675 MHz, and CTAF/UNICOM is 123.05 MHz. According to the airport's own published data, the runway 5 ILS localizer operates on 111.7 MHz, a ground communications outlet (GCO) is available on 135.075 MHz, and Norfolk VORTAC (116.9 MHz) lies on the 210 degree radial at 14.9 nautical miles from the field. Approach lighting comprises MALSR and PAPI on runway 5, and REIL and PAPI on runway 23.

Joining & Circuit Procedures

The published traffic pattern is left-hand for runway 05 and right-hand for runway 23. Pilots without a clearance can use the GCO on 135.075 MHz to obtain one before departure.

Visual Reference Points

The airport is located a short distance south of Norfolk, with Portsmouth and Virginia Beach also nearby, giving pilots several large urban landmarks to orient towards when inbound from the Hampton Roads area.

History

Chesapeake Regional Airport is owned by the Chesapeake Airport Authority and covers an area of 430 acres. It carries the FAA identifier CPK and, unusually for a US airport, a different IATA code, QQP. Horizon Aviation operates as the field's fixed-base operator.

The Airfield Today

The airport offers Jet A and 100LL fuel through a 24-hour self-service facility, and major airframe and powerplant maintenance is available on the field. Flight services, including GCO, AWOS, weather and NOTAM information, are offered to the flying public, with additional services provided by Horizon Flight Center, Epix Aviation and Jet Air Charter based at the airport.
