Clinton Sherman Airport (KCSM) is a former military airfield near Clinton in western Oklahoma, now operated as an industrial airpark and licensed spaceport with one of the longest runways in North America. Its scale, full ILS approach and quiet general-aviation traffic make it a striking and unusual stop for a VFR pilot exploring the region.

Overview

Clinton Sherman Airport, identified as KCSM, sits beside the town of Clinton in western Oklahoma and is now known as the Oklahoma Air & Space Port, operated by the Oklahoma Space Industry Development Authority for general aviation, aerospace testing and industrial operations. Its most notable feature is a runway system of exceptional length, a legacy of its military past, which gives it a very different character from the small strips typical of the surrounding farmland and makes it a memorable destination for simulator pilots.

Airspace & Location

The airfield lies at coordinates 35.3398, -99.2005 at an elevation of 1909 feet, close to the town of Clinton in Custer County, Oklahoma. Air traffic in the area is handled by Fort Worth Center, which provides approach and departure services on 128.4 MHz.

Weather information is broadcast on the ASOS frequency of 135.225 MHz, while Fort Worth Center provides area/departure control on 128.4 MHz. The main runway, 17R, is equipped with an ILS approach.

History

The airfield is recorded in reference sources under the name Clinton-Sherman Industrial Airpark, reflecting its post-military redevelopment as an industrial and aviation site. It is now designated the Oklahoma Air & Space Port, reflecting its use for general aviation and aerospace operations.

The Airfield Today

The Oklahoma Air & Space Port at Clinton Sherman Airport offers what is described as one of the largest all-weather runways in North America, a 13,503 by 300 foot concrete surface equipped with ILS and REILS lighting, supporting general aviation and aerospace operations at the field.
