Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) is a major Class B hub airport situated south of Cincinnati, Ohio, on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River near Covington and Hebron. It offers a set of long, fully lit runways with ILS coverage on every threshold, making it a substantial destination for airline and cargo-style simulator flights. The field is a significant regional and cargo hub with full air traffic control services and international customs facilities.

Overview

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, identified by the ICAO code KCVG, is a large international airport serving the Cincinnati, Ohio and Covington, Kentucky area. It sits at an elevation of 873 feet and is equipped with four physical runways, all fitted with ILS and runway lighting, reflecting its role as a major scheduled-airline and cargo hub. For the simulator pilot, CVG offers a realistic exercise in operating within controlled Class B airspace at a busy, multi-runway commercial airport.

Airspace & Location

CVG lies within controlled Class B airspace, centred on coordinates 39.0488N, 84.6678W at an elevation of 873 feet, in the Cincinnati/Covington area of the Ohio-Kentucky border region. Approach and departure services are split by direction of flight, with separate frequencies covering the 090-269 degree and 270-089 degree sectors, indicative of the airport's position within a busy metropolitan terminal area.

Runways

CVG has four physical runways. Runway 09/27 is the longest, at 11,970 feet, hard-surfaced, lit and equipped with ILS in both directions. Runway 18C/36C measures approximately 10,980 feet, also hard-surfaced, lit and ILS-equipped. Runway 18L/36R is 9,991 feet long, hard-surfaced, lit and ILS-equipped, while Runway 18R/36L is the shortest at 7,993 feet, again hard-surfaced, lit and served by ILS.

Radio & Navigation

CVG offers a full suite of radio and navigation services. Clearance Delivery is on 127.175 MHz, Ground on 121.7 MHz, and Tower services are split by runway: 118.3 MHz for Runway 09-27 and 18C-36C, 118.975 MHz for Runway 18L-36R, and 133.325 MHz for Runway 18R-36L. Cincinnati Approach operates on 119.7 MHz for the 090-269 degree sector and 123.875 MHz for the 270-089 degree sector, with Cincinnati Departure on 126.65 MHz (001-180 degrees) and 128.7 MHz (181-360 degrees). Cincinnati Class B airspace frequencies are 121 MHz (001-180 degrees) and 128.7 MHz (181-360 degrees). D-ATIS is broadcast on 134.375 MHz and an additional Arrival ATIS on 135.3 MHz, and UNICOM is available on 122.95 MHz. The emergency frequency 121.5 MHz is also monitored.

Joining & Circuit Procedures

As a Class B controlled airport with multiple long runways, all traffic at CVG operates under positive air traffic control rather than an uncontrolled circuit pattern. Tower control is divided by runway pair, with separate frequencies for Runway 09-27/18C-36C, Runway 18L-36R and Runway 18R-36L, and pilots should expect to be worked by Ground, Clearance Delivery, Tower, Departure and Approach in sequence as appropriate to the phase of flight.

The Airfield Today

CVG continues to operate as an active hub for scheduled passenger and cargo airlines, with carriers periodically adding new routes; recent additions have included nonstop services from airlines such as Breeze Airways and Southwest Airlines. The airport handles international arrivals and maintains customs facilities to support cross-border traffic.
