Duluth International Airport lies on the shore of Lake Superior in northern Minnesota, sharing its single field with the Minnesota Air National Guard's 148th Fighter Wing and its F-16C Fighting Falcons. With two long hard-surfaced runways, one served by an ILS, and a mix of airline, general aviation and military traffic, it is an interesting and demanding destination for the visiting simulator pilot.

Overview

Duluth International Airport (KDLH) is a city-owned, joint civil-military airport serving Duluth, Minnesota, and the wider Twin Ports region on the western tip of Lake Superior. It hosts scheduled service from Delta, United and Sun Country alongside a substantial general aviation population, and shares its runways with Duluth Air National Guard Base, home to the 148th Fighter Wing and its F-16C Fighting Falcons. The combination of long instrument-approach runways, military jet traffic and a Great Lakes setting makes it a distinctive field for VFR and IFR flying alike.

Airspace & Location

The airport is located about five nautical miles northwest of downtown Duluth, in Saint Louis County, Minnesota, on high ground overlooking Lake Superior. It is a joint-use facility, with the civilian terminal and general aviation ramps sharing the airfield with Duluth Air National Guard Base.

Runways

Duluth International has two physical runways. The main runway, 09/27, is a hard-surfaced, lit strip equipped with an ILS, measuring 11,133 feet as runway 09 and 10,148 feet as runway 27. The crosswind runway, 03/21, is also hard-surfaced and lit, and measures 5,707 feet in each direction, but has no instrument landing system. Field elevation is 1,417 feet.

Radio & Navigation

Pilots can expect Approach/Departure on 125.45 MHz, Tower on 118.3 MHz, Ground on 121.9 MHz and ATIS on 124.1 MHz. UNICOM is available on 122.95 MHz. Runway 09/27 is served by an ILS for instrument approaches.

History

The facility was renamed Duluth International Airport by the Duluth Airport Authority Board in 1961. It has long combined civilian and military flying, with the Minnesota Air National Guard's 148th Fighter Wing based on the airfield at Duluth Air National Guard Base, flying F-16C Fighting Falcons.

The Airfield Today

Duluth International is Minnesota's third-busiest airport after Minneapolis-St Paul International and Rochester International, and is used mainly for general aviation alongside its airline services. Delta operates daily flights to Minneapolis-St Paul, United flies direct to Chicago, and Sun Country provides seasonal non-stop service to Fort Myers, Florida. The field also encompasses Sky Harbor Airport and Seaplane Base as an associated general aviation facility.
