Davenport Municipal Airport (KDVN) is a busy general aviation field about seven miles north of downtown Davenport, Iowa, on the east bank of the Mississippi in Scott County. Operated by the City of Davenport, it offers a full-length ILS runway, an active FBO, and a mix of training, charter and military traffic, making it a useful and interesting stop for visiting VFR pilots in the Quad Cities area.
Davenport Municipal Airport is a city-owned general aviation airport serving Davenport, Iowa, and the wider Quad Cities region. It has been in operation since 1948 and today combines flight training, charter and maintenance work with a long-running civilian air show, plus a resident U.S. Army National Guard aviation unit and a National Weather Service office on the field. For a simulator pilot it offers a good mix of an ILS-equipped hard runway, a crosswind strip, and proximity to the larger Quad Cities International Airport, making it a realistic and varied VFR destination.
The airport lies in Scott County, Iowa, about 7 miles (11 km) north of downtown Davenport. It sits within the terminal airspace served by Quad City Approach/Departure, which provides an approach/departure frequency and a clearance delivery service for the field even though Davenport Municipal itself is non-towered. Quad City International Airport, which handles the area's commercial traffic, lies nearby and pilots should expect to coordinate with Quad City Approach when operating in the vicinity.
Davenport Municipal has two paved, lit hard-surface runways. Runway 15/33 is the longer of the pair at 5,491 feet and is equipped with an ILS on runway 15. Runway 03/21 is 3,960 feet long, also hard-surfaced and lit, but without an instrument landing system.
Traffic can be worked on the combined CTAF/UNICOM frequency of 123 MHz. Quad City Approach/Departure is available on 125.95 MHz, with clearance delivery on 118.35 MHz (Quad City Clearance Delivery). A remote radio outlet, Fort Dodge Radio, is available on 122.5 MHz. The field's ASOS broadcasts weather on 120.175 MHz. Runway 15 offers an ILS approach and is supported by MALSR lighting; all runways have published RNAV approaches, and runways 03/21 are additionally served by a VOR approach based on the off-field Davenport VORTAC (DVN, 113.8).
All runways use left-hand traffic patterns. Runway 15 is designated as the calm-wind runway. Runway edge lighting is medium to high intensity, and VASI glide slope indicators set to 3.0 degrees are provided to assist visual approaches.
The airport lies off Harrison Street on the north side of Davenport, with the River Cities Industrial Center situated across from the main airport entrance; these features can help with visual orientation when inbound from the south.
Davenport Municipal Airport dates back to 1948. It has hosted the Quad City Air Show since 1987, one of the longest continuously running air shows in the United States and the largest in Iowa, held annually on the last weekend of June and noted for having featured every North American military demonstration team as well as international performers. A new 7,460 square foot terminal with an attached 20,000 square foot hangar, built by Carver Aero at a cost of $3 million, opened in January 2011, replacing the airport's original 1950s-era terminal. In 2012 the airport received a federal grant for an environmental impact study connected with a planned extension of runway 15/33.
The airport is home to Revv Aviation (formerly Carver Aero), the field's fixed-base operator, which offers flight charter, aircraft rental, flight training, and line and maintenance services from a fleet that has included a Cessna Citation V, King Air 350 and 200, a Cessna 172P and several Piper PA-28s. The field also hosts a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Quad Cities National Weather Service office and an Iowa Army National Guard aviation battalion operating CH-47F Chinook and UH-72 Lakota helicopters. Facilities include 78 T-hangars, six box-style hangars and two executive box hangars. The airport is typically staffed from 06:30 to dusk, and a 24-hour self-serve fuel pump dispensing 100LL is available on site.
