There is no control tower on the field, and traffic in the vicinity works with Philadelphia Approach/Departure for advisory services.

Doylestown Airport was founded in May 1942 as a dual-use airport and farm. Between 1957 and 1960 the site, previously a pig farm owned and managed by aviator John Van Sant, was converted for aviation use; Van Sant was also the founder of the nearby Van Sant Airport. The Bucks County Airport Authority purchased the field in 1962 and has continuously managed it since.
The airport is a public general aviation field covering around 200 acres, with a single paved runway, full and connecting taxiways, hangars, tie-downs, a maintenance hangar and a terminal building. Leading Edge Aviation has served as the field's fixed-base operator since 1993, providing aviation and jet fuel, aircraft maintenance and line service, flight instruction, aircraft rentals and charter flights. The field also hosts Civil Air Patrol squadron 907 and offers picnic tables near the terminal for visitors watching flying activity, along with free car parking.
