Meeker Airport (KEEO) is a small county-owned general aviation field serving the town of Meeker in the mountains of northwest Colorado. Operated for decades by the Coulter family's FBO, it offers a single hard-surfaced runway at a high elevation of 6,381 feet, making it a useful stop for pilots exploring the Western Slope. Surrounding terrain and wildlife make careful visual navigation and circuit discipline important here.
Meeker Airport, identified as KEEO, lies at Meeker in northwest Colorado and is owned and funded by Rio Blanco County. It has long been operated as a full-service FBO by the Coulter family, and today supports a mix of recreational and student flying, business and private jets, medical and firefighting aircraft, tourism flights and aerial spraying. For a simulator pilot, its appeal lies in the high-elevation, mountain-ringed setting and the character of a genuinely local, long-serving small-town airfield.
The airfield sits at coordinates 40.0488, -107.886, at a field elevation of 6,381 feet, on the outskirts of Meeker in Rio Blanco County, northwest Colorado. It lies in uncontrolled airspace beneath the overlying structure worked by Denver Center, with mountains rising to the west and north of the field itself.
Meeker has a single physical runway, 03/21, aligned roughly north-northeast to south-southwest. It measures 6,496 feet in length, has a hard surface, and is lit. There is no ILS approach available.
Pilots should monitor the ASOS on 135.525 MHz for automated weather. Denver Center can be reached on 134.5 MHz, with Denver Radio available on 122.15 MHz. The common traffic advisory frequency and unicom is 122.8 MHz, and this is the frequency to use for self-announcing arrivals and departures.
Traffic for Runway 3 flies a right-hand pattern. Runway lighting, including PAPI, REIL and MIRL, is pilot-activated rather than continuously on. Pilots should be alert for deer, elk and waterfowl in the vicinity of the airport; an eight-foot wildlife fence surrounds the field as a mitigation measure.
The mountains immediately to the west and north of the airport are the most useful visual landmarks for identifying and joining the field, given its setting among the ridgelines of northwest Colorado.
Meeker's airfield began life in 1946 as a dusty gravel strip and has since grown into what is now described as a modern general aviation hub for the region. Rio Blanco County owns the airfield, including its ramps, taxiway and runway, while day-to-day operation has been in the hands of the Coulter family for most of its existence. Gary Coulter ran the airport for fifty years until his death in 2013, after which his son Lanny Coulter took over management, working alongside his wife Danette and daughter Brianne. The field has been staffed twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, for around 65 years.
Coulter Aviation operates Meeker as a full-service FBO, offering aircraft maintenance and repair, fuel, courtesy cars and rental car arrangements. A flight school, Blunt Aviation, has recently been established at the field, adding to its role in training alongside its regular traffic of business and private jets, recreational and student pilots, medical and firefighting aircraft, tourism flights and aerial spray operations.
