Shelby-Cleveland County Regional Airport is a small public-use general aviation field lying a few miles southwest of Shelby, North Carolina, and owned by the City of Shelby. With a single long asphalt runway and a straightforward radio setup, it is a convenient and uncomplicated destination for VFR pilots exploring the North Carolina piedmont.

Overview

Shelby-Cleveland County Regional Airport (ICAO KEHO, FAA LID EHO) is a city-owned, public-use general aviation airport serving Shelby and Cleveland County in North Carolina. It has no scheduled airline service and functions purely as a general aviation field, making it a relaxed stop for visiting VFR traffic. The airport is also home to the Shelby Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, the US Air Force's civilian auxiliary.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits close to Shelby's central business district in Cleveland County, North Carolina. Air traffic in the vicinity is worked by Charlotte Approach/Departure on 134.75 MHz, reflecting the field's position within the wider Charlotte terminal area to the east.

Runways

The airport has one physical runway, 05/23, a hard-surfaced strip 5,000 feet long and lit for night operations. There is no ILS approach available at the field.

Radio & Navigation

Air-to-ground communication is handled via UNICOM/CTAF on 122.8 MHz. An AWOS-3 automated weather observing system is available on 118.425 MHz. For arrivals and departures requiring a service beyond the airport environment, Charlotte Approach/Departure operates on 134.75 MHz.

History

The airport was formerly known as Shelby Municipal Airport before being renamed Shelby-Cleveland County Regional Airport, and it remains owned by the City of Shelby. It is home to the Shelby Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, the USAF's civilian auxiliary organisation.

The Airfield Today

The field continues to operate as a general aviation airport supporting local flying activity, including Civil Air Patrol operations through the based Shelby Composite Squadron. Weather information is available locally via AWOS, and traffic is coordinated by UNICOM on the CTAF frequency.
