Ennis Big Sky Airport is owned by Madison County and has long served as the general aviation gateway for the town of Ennis, located some six nautical miles to the northwest. It was included in the FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011 to 2015, which categorised it as a general aviation airport. In February 2020 the airfield was awarded a 5.6 million dollar FAA grant to extend its main taxiway to 7,600 feet, repave sections of the runway, and expand the airport property, reflecting continued investment in the facility.
The airfield is served by Ascension FBO Network, which provides fuel, aircraft and hangar rental, and other general aviation support services. In the twelve months to July 2019 the airport recorded around 12,350 aircraft operations, averaging 34 per day, with the great majority being general aviation flights alongside a small proportion of air taxi and military movements; at that time 34 aircraft were based there, comprising single-engine aircraft, multi-engine aircraft and helicopters.
