Four Corners Regional Airport (KFMN) serves Farmington, New Mexico, as a Class D towered general aviation field with a long and colourful commercial aviation history. Sitting at just under 5,500 feet elevation in the high desert of San Juan County, it offers a full ILS approach, twin hard-surfaced runways and a full-service FBO, making it a useful and interesting stop for visiting pilots in the Four Corners region.

Overview

Four Corners Regional Airport is a city-owned, Class D towered general aviation airport at Farmington, New Mexico, in San Juan County. Once a significant regional airline hub, it now supports a busy mix of general aviation, air taxi and a small amount of military traffic, along with a resumed scheduled United Express service to Denver. Its history as a onetime home to Mesa Airlines and a stopover for several historic regional carriers gives it more depth than the typical small-town field, while its ILS-equipped runway and full ARFF cover make it a practical destination for simulator pilots exploring the high desert Southwest.

Airspace & Location

KFMN lies within Class D controlled airspace, reflecting its status as a towered airport, in San Juan County, New Mexico, within the city of Farmington, which owns and operates the field. The airport sits under the wider air traffic structure of Denver Center to the north and Albuquerque Radio coverage to the south, both of which are used for frequency guidance approaching or departing the area.

Runways

KFMN has two paired hard-surfaced runways, both lit. Runway 07/25 is 6,451 feet in the 07 direction and 6,450 feet as 25, with 25 served by an ILS approach. Runway 05/23 is 6,488 feet as 05 and 5,962 feet as 23. Field elevation is 5,489 feet.

Radio & Navigation

Farmington Tower operates as the airport's air traffic control callsign, on 118.9 MHz, which also serves as the CTAF. Ground control is on 121.7 MHz, and ATIS is broadcast on 127.15 MHz. Unicom is available on 122.95 MHz. For area coordination, Denver Center is on 118.575 MHz and Albuquerque Radio on 122.4 MHz. Runway 25 is equipped with an ILS approach.

Joining & Circuit Procedures

As a Class D towered airport, arriving and departing traffic at KFMN is required to establish two-way radio contact with Farmington Tower before entering the airport's controlled airspace, using 118.9 MHz for both tower and CTAF purposes, with ground movements coordinated on 121.7 MHz.

History

Four Corners Regional Airport has a rich commercial aviation history for a field of its size. Frontier Airlines served Farmington with DC-3s from the 1950s, at one point in 1958 running a mini-hub with 13 flights a day and up to five DC-3s on the ground simultaneously; the airline later upgraded to Convair 340 and Convair 580 aircraft, and even flew Boeing 737-200 jets on its Denver route between 1982 and 1984, before all Frontier service ended in early 1985. Aspen Airways operated Convair 580s to Denver and Albuquerque from 1979, returned in 1983, and became a United Express affiliate in 1986, at times flying British Aerospace 146 jets. Mesa Airlines was founded and headquartered at Farmington from 1980, growing through the 1980s and 1990s to operate up to 30 flights a day, flying as a United Express affiliate to Denver and an America West Express affiliate to Phoenix, before ending all service in 2008. Great Lakes Airlines then provided service from 1998 to 2017, connecting Farmington to Denver and at times Phoenix, Las Vegas and Los Angeles, until commercial air service ceased entirely in 2017. The airport received a federal Small Community Air Service Development Program grant in 2019 to restore scheduled service, with SkyWest Airlines eventually beginning daily United Express flights to Denver in May 2025 after pandemic-related delays.

The Airfield Today

KFMN today operates as a Class D towered general aviation airport with full-time Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting cover and an air traffic control tower, alongside daily United Express service to Denver and FedEx Feeder cargo flights to Albuquerque. The field supports chartered flight services and flight instruction, and hosts a full-service fixed-base operator, Atlantic Aviation, along with small and large hangar leasing and shaded aircraft parking. General aviation dominates operations, accounting for the large majority of the airport's tens of thousands of annual aircraft movements, with air taxi and a small proportion of military activity making up the remainder. A single terminal handles all arrivals and departures.
