Bishop International Airport lies in southwestern Flint, Michigan, and is operated by the Bishop International Airport Authority, a body formed jointly by the City of Flint and Genesee County. It combines scheduled airline service from Allegiant Air, United Express and American Eagle with a significant general aviation presence, including a fixed-base operator and several flight schools, making it an interesting stop for a simulator pilot wanting a mid-sized Midwestern airport with Class C procedures, ILS approaches and genuine airline traffic to work around.
The field sits within Class C airspace, reflecting its status as a scheduled airline airport with radar approach control services provided by Flint Approach/Departure. It is located in southwestern Flint, bordered by Flint Township to the north, east and west, and Mundy Township to the south. Traffic clearance and ground movement are coordinated through dedicated clearance delivery and ground frequencies, and inbound traffic is handled by an approach control sector before being passed to the tower.
Bishop International has two paired hard-surfaced runways, both lit. Runway 18/36 is the longer of the pair, with runway 36 measured at 7,849 ft and runway 18 at 7,648 ft. Runway 09/27 is equipped with an instrument landing system on both thresholds, with runway 27 at 7,190 ft and runway 09 at 7,189 ft. Field elevation is 768 ft.
Flint Approach/Departure operates on 118.8 MHz, with ATIS broadcast on 133.15 MHz. Clearance delivery is available on 121.75 MHz. The tower, Flint Tower, operates on 126.3 MHz, which also serves as the CTAF. Ground movement is handled by Flint Ground on 121.9 MHz, and Lansing Radio can be reached on 122.3 MHz. UNICOM is available on 122.95 MHz. Both runway 09 and runway 27 are served by ILS approaches.
The airport traces its origins to 1928, when the family of banker and General Motors board member Arthur Giles Bishop donated 220 acres of farmland to the City of Flint for aeronautical purposes. The City of Flint operated the airport under the name Bishop Airport until 1987, when the City and Genesee County jointly formed the Bishop International Airport Authority to manage it. The current passenger terminal was completed in 1993, designed by Reynolds, Smith & Hills, and has since been renovated and expanded. Through the 1990s and 2000s the airport saw a succession of airline operators, including Northwest Airlink, Skyway Airlines, USAir, ValuJet (later AirTran Airways), Delta Air Lines, ATA Connection and American Eagle, with competition between carriers driving periods of significant growth in scheduled service, including flights to Florida and Las Vegas.
Bishop International remains the third-busiest airport in Michigan behind Detroit and Grand Rapids, and continues to be served by Allegiant Air, United Express and American Eagle, offering passenger flights to destinations across the United States; Allegiant designated Flint a focus city in February 2022. The airport also hosts a freight terminal used by FedEx Express and an affiliate of FedEx Feeder. General aviation and airline handling are provided by fixed-base operator AvFlight, and the field is home to several flight schools, including the Greater Flint Pilots Association, American Wings Aviation and Crosswinds Aviation, with 98 based aircraft recorded.
