Francis S Gabreski Airport is a joint civil-military field on eastern Long Island, three nautical miles north of Westhampton Beach, New York. Named for World War II fighter ace Colonel Francis S. Gabreski, it offers a long ILS-equipped main runway alongside two shorter crosswind strips, making it a useful stop for VFR pilots exploring the Hamptons and the eastern reaches of Long Island.

Overview

Francis S Gabreski Airport is a county-owned airport shared by civilian general aviation and an Air National Guard unit, situated on Long Island's South Fork near the Hamptons. It is named after Colonel Francis S. Gabreski, a US Army Air Forces flying ace of the Second World War, and its combination of a long, ILS-served main runway with two shorter crosswind runways makes it accessible to a wide range of aircraft, from light singles to business jets.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies about three nautical miles north of the central business district of Westhampton Beach, in Suffolk County on Long Island, roughly 80 miles east of New York City. Approach and departure control for the area is provided by New York Approach/Departure.

Runways

The airfield has three physical runways. Runway 06/24 is the main runway at 8,982 feet, hard-surfaced and lit, with an instrument landing system serving runway 24. Runway 01/19 is 4,996 feet, hard-surfaced, without lighting listed. Runway 15/33 is 4,970 feet, hard-surfaced and lit.

Radio & Navigation

Air traffic control is provided from the tower on 125.3 MHz, which also serves as the CTAF. Ground control operates on 121.8 MHz. New York Approach/Departure works the airport on 118.95 MHz. The automated weather observation system (ASOS) broadcasts on 119.925 MHz, and UNICOM is available on 122.95 MHz. A separate operations frequency, 28.75 MHz, is used by the Air National Guard unit based at the field.

Visual Reference Points

The airport is located three nautical miles north of Westhampton Beach's central business district, which serves as a useful visual reference for pilots approaching from the south along the coast.

History

The airfield was known as Suffolk County Air Force Base until 1969 and subsequently as Suffolk County Airport until 1991, when it was renamed in honour of Colonel Francis S. Gabreski, a US Army Air Forces flying ace of the Second World War. It continues to operate as a joint civil-military facility, with an Air National Guard presence alongside general aviation traffic.

The Airfield Today

Gabreski Airport functions as a joint-use field, hosting general aviation traffic alongside an Air National Guard unit. Fixed-base operators provide fuel and handling for transient civilian aircraft, while the military ramp is subject to prior permission requirements and has limited space, meaning transient aircraft may be directed to the civilian FBO outside duty hours.
