Northeast Wyoming Regional Airport, more commonly known as Gillette-Campbell County Airport, lies five miles northwest of Gillette in Campbell County, Wyoming, at a field elevation of 4,337 feet. It combines scheduled commercial service to Denver with a busy general aviation base, and offers an ILS approach to one of its two hard-surfaced runways, making it a useful high-plains waypoint for VFR pilots crossing northeastern Wyoming.

Overview

Northeast Wyoming Regional Airport serves the city of Gillette and surrounding Campbell County, sitting on high plains terrain at an elevation of 4,337 feet. It is a public airport owned by Campbell County, handling a mix of general aviation, air taxi and a small amount of scheduled airline traffic to Denver. For a simulator pilot, the field's combination of a long ILS-equipped runway, a shorter crosswind strip and its high-altitude, energy-industry setting in the Powder River Basin make it an interesting stop on a Wyoming cross-country.

Airspace & Location

The airport is located in Campbell County, Wyoming, about five miles northwest of the city of Gillette. Surrounding en-route airspace is worked by Denver Center on 135.6 MHz. The airfield's control tower ceased operations as of 30 June 2020, so traffic at the field now coordinates on the common traffic advisory frequency rather than through a staffed tower.

Runways

The airport has two physical runways, both hard-surfaced and lit. Runway 16/34 is the longer of the pair at 7,502 feet, with an ILS serving runway 34. Runway 03/21 is 5,803 feet long and also lit, giving a crosswind option relative to the main runway.

Radio & Navigation

Weather is available on the ASOS at 124.175 MHz. The common traffic advisory frequency is 118.5 MHz, which was also the former tower frequency; ground movements were coordinated on 121.7 MHz. Casper Radio can be reached on 122.3 MHz, and Denver Center on 135.6 MHz for en-route services. Unicom is on 122.95 MHz. An ILS approach is published to runway 34.

Joining & Circuit Procedures

With the control tower's operations suspended since 30 June 2020, arriving and departing traffic now uses the CTAF on 118.5 MHz to self-announce intentions and coordinate with other aircraft in the vicinity, in place of the tower service that existed when the tower was built and staffed from the early 1980s until its closure.

History

The airport was built to serve Gillette and the wider Campbell County area and grew into a primary commercial service airport, defined by the Federal Aviation Administration as one handling more than 10,000 passenger boardings a year; it recorded 29,271 enplanements in 2016 and 28,383 in 2017. A control tower was constructed in the early 1980s to manage the field's traffic, but tower operations were formally suspended on 30 June 2020. The airport covers 894 acres and holds two concrete runways, 16/34 and 3/21, reflecting decades of use by both general aviation and scheduled carriers serving the Gillette energy sector.

The Airfield Today

Today the airport handles a mix of traffic dominated by general aviation, which in 2018 accounted for 77 percent of the roughly 12,318 annual aircraft operations, with air taxi flights making up most of the remainder and a small proportion of airline and military movements. Around 65 aircraft are based at the field, the large majority single-engine piston types. Scheduled commercial service is provided to Denver, Colorado, and the airport is supported by a fixed-base operator, Flightline Inc., on the field.
