The airport lies in Maricopa County, Arizona, about seven miles (11 km) west of downtown Glendale, close to the intersection of Glendale Avenue and Glen Harbor Boulevard, just west of the Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway), roughly ten minutes north of Interstate 10 and a similar distance west of Interstate 17. Its published approach/departure frequency is shared with Luke Air Force Base ('Luke App/Dep'), reflecting its position within that base's approach and departure airspace, so pilots should expect to work with Luke controllers when arriving or departing.
The field has one physical runway, 01/19, oriented north-south. Runway 01 is 6,445 feet long and Runway 19 is 6,142 feet long; both are hard-surfaced and lit.
Traffic works Luke Approach/Departure on 120.5 MHz. The airport's own common traffic advisory frequency and tower frequency is 121 MHz, with Ground on 118 MHz. ATIS and AWOS-3 weather information is broadcast on 119.425 MHz. UNICOM is available on 122.95 MHz, and a remote radio outlet to Prescott Radio (flight service) is listed on 122.6 MHz. There is no ILS approach at the airport.
The airport is readily identified by its position just west of the Loop 101 freeway near the Glendale Avenue and Glen Harbor Boulevard intersection, and by the surrounding Valley of the Sun development in this part of the Phoenix metropolitan area.
Glendale Municipal Airport is owned by the City of Glendale and has long served as a general aviation reliever field for the Phoenix area. As of the FAA's 2008 data it recorded 136,289 aircraft operations over a twelve-month period, an average of 373 per day, with traffic split roughly 98 percent general aviation, 1 percent air taxi and 1 percent military; 220 aircraft were based there at that time, predominantly single-engine types, with smaller numbers of ultralights, multi-engine aircraft, jets and helicopters.
The airport continues to support general aviation and corporate jet traffic, with enclosed hangars, corporate meeting space and flight instruction available on the field, alongside car rental services for visiting pilots. It remains classified as a general aviation reliever airport within the Phoenix area's airport system.
