Shelbyville Municipal Airport (KGEZ) is a city-owned general aviation field four nautical miles northwest of Shelbyville, Indiana, offering a long lit hard-surface runway alongside a shorter grass strip. It traces its origins to a 1930s emergency airmail landing ground and today doubles as the headquarters of the Indiana National Guard's 38th Combat Aviation Brigade.
Shelbyville Municipal Airport is a public-use general aviation aerodrome serving Shelbyville, Indiana, and the surrounding Shelby County area. It is owned by the city and overseen by an appointed Board of Aviation Commissioners, and it is of particular interest to sim pilots for its mix of a substantial paved runway and a genuine grass strip, plus its role as home to a National Guard aviation brigade headquarters.
The airport lies about four nautical miles northwest of Shelbyville's central business district, in Shelby County, Indiana. It is an uncontrolled field, with traffic in the surrounding area worked by Indianapolis Approach/Departure on 127.15 MHz.
The field has two physical runways. Runway 01/19 is 4,976 feet long, has a hard surface and is lit, making it usable for night operations. Runway 09/27 is a shorter 2,620-foot grass strip with no lighting, better suited to lighter GA traffic in good conditions.
There is no control tower at Shelbyville; pilots use the CTAF/UNICOM frequency of 122.8 MHz. Weather is available via ASOS on 121.55 MHz. Indianapolis Approach/Departure can be reached on 127.15 MHz for traffic advisories in the surrounding airspace. The frequency data also lists an Army National Guard operations frequency of 41.5 MHz and a Terre Haute radio frequency of 112 MHz associated with the field.
The airport's origins go back to the early days of American aviation: in the 1930s the site served as an emergency landing field for airmail pilots, and it was designated a Department of Commerce intermediate landing field (site No. 8) on the Cincinnati-Chicago Airway. The Indiana Aeronautics Commission, established in 1945 to develop and regulate aviation infrastructure across the state, played a role in the airport's subsequent expansion; that commission became part of the Indiana Department of Transportation in 1981. The airport is also the headquarters of the 38th Combat Aviation Brigade, 38th Infantry Division, Indiana National Guard.
Shelbyville Municipal Airport remains a city-owned facility run by the Shelbyville Board of Aviation Commissioners. Historically the airport has supported a mix of single-engine, multi-engine and jet general aviation traffic based on the field. Current airport authority projects include the construction of new T-Hangar facilities and associated airfield infrastructure, funded in part through FAA Airport Improvement Program and Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act grants.
