Greenville Downtown Airport (KGMU) is a busy general aviation field just three miles east of downtown Greenville, South Carolina, and is recognised as the busiest GA airport in the state. It offers a tower-controlled environment with two crossing hard-surfaced runways, one served by an ILS, making it a practical and interesting destination for visiting VFR and IFR pilots alike.
Greenville Downtown Airport, identified as GMU, sits on the eastern edge of the city of Greenville, South Carolina, close to the heart of its downtown business district. It is owned and operated by the Greenville Airport Commission and is described as the busiest general aviation airport in South Carolina, serving business and owner-flown traffic, air taxi operations, a local medivac network and a number of flight schools based on the field. For a simulator pilot it offers a lively mix of corporate jet, piston and helicopter traffic against an urban backdrop, along with the novelty of two intersecting hard runways and an ILS approach.
The airport lies on the eastern side of Greenville, south of Interstate 385 and east of North Pleasantburg Drive, about three miles from the city centre. It is a tower-controlled field, with its own ground and tower frequencies and an ATIS-style automated weather broadcast, and traffic in the Greer approach and departure sector is worked on a discrete frequency. Greenville Downtown is six miles southwest of the larger Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) and about five miles north of Donaldson Field Airport (GYH), so pilots transiting the area should expect other airport traffic patterns in close proximity.
Greenville Downtown has two paved runways arranged as a crossing pair. Runway 01/19 is 5,392 feet long, hard-surfaced and lit, with an ILS serving runway 01. Runway 10/28 is the shorter crossing strip, with runway 10 at 3,718 feet and runway 28 at 3,714 feet, also hard-surfaced and lit. Field elevation is 1,010 feet.
Approach and departure services in the area are provided by Greer Approach/Departure on 118.8 MHz. The field's automated weather observation is broadcast on 127.075 MHz. Tower and the common traffic advisory frequency both operate on 119.9 MHz, with ground control on 121.25 MHz, and a UNICOM frequency is available on 122.95 MHz. The runway 01 approach is supported by an ILS.
Greenville's Swamp Rabbit Trail runs close to the airport's southern boundary, and the field's Community Corridor, with its Runway Park, Takeoff Mini Golf and Military History Museum, sits on the south ramp and is visible from the air as a distinctive cluster of recreational features alongside the runway. Interstate 385 passes just to the north of the airport and North Pleasantburg Drive runs along its western side, both useful as visual references when approaching the field.
The airport's terminal building dates from 1953 and was fully renovated in 1991, a renovation that won a national award. Greenville Downtown Airport is governed by a five-person appointed commission authorised under Act 919 and has long served as the primary general aviation and corporate gateway for the Greenville area, growing to become the busiest general aviation airport in South Carolina.
The airport today supports a wide range of general aviation activity, including seven flight schools based on the field, corporate and business aviation, air taxi services and a local medivac network, alongside an FBO and ramp areas located in all four quadrants of the airport. A 2018 economic impact study found the airport supported more than 547 jobs and contributed an estimated 68.8 million dollars annually to the South Carolina economy. The airport's Community Corridor on the south ramp, including Runway Park, Takeoff Mini Golf and a Military History Museum, provides public viewing areas for aircraft movements and hosts scheduled airport tours and community events.
