Glenwood Springs Municipal Airport (KGWS), recently rebranded KGWS Sumers Airpark, is a small general aviation field serving the town of Glenwood Springs in the mountains of western Colorado. It offers a single hard-surfaced runway at a field elevation of nearly 5,909 feet, making it a useful but demanding gateway for pilots visiting Glenwood Canyon and the surrounding high country.
KGWS is a general aviation airfield at Glenwood Springs, Colorado, owned by the City of Glenwood Springs and, since May 2024, managed under lease by KGWS Sumers Airpark, a nonprofit organisation formed by local pilots, community members and aviation enthusiasts. It is a modest single-runway field that supports recreational flying, flight training, business flying and aerial inspection work, and it is of particular interest to simulator pilots as a mountain airport gateway to Glenwood Canyon and Hanging Lake.
The airfield lies at Glenwood Springs in western Colorado, in mountainous terrain typical of the region, with the town and Glenwood Canyon nearby. It is an uncontrolled general aviation airfield without an air traffic control tower, operating on a common traffic advisory frequency shared with UNICOM.
KGWS has a single physical runway, 14/32, with a hard surface and a length of 3,311 feet. There is no ILS or other instrument approach aid at the field.
Pilots should use Denver Radio on 122.2 MHz, with 123.0 MHz serving as the CTAF and UNICOM frequency for traffic advisories and airfield communications at Glenwood Springs.
The airfield serves as a general aviation gateway for pilots visiting Glenwood Canyon and Hanging Lake, both prominent and useful visual landmarks in the vicinity for locating and approaching the field.
The airfield was long known as Glenwood Springs Municipal Airport under city ownership. On 1 May 2024 it was renamed KGWS Sumers Airpark after a newly formed 501(c)4 nonprofit organisation, made up of local pilots, community members and aviation enthusiasts, signed a lease with the City of Glenwood Springs on 4 April 2024 to take over management of the airfield.
The airport remains owned by the City of Glenwood Springs but is managed by the nonprofit KGWS Sumers Airpark. It supports recreational flying, flight instruction, business aviation activity and aerial inspection work, and is classified as a GA-Local airport within Colorado's aviation system. It continues to function as a general aviation gateway for pilots heading into Glenwood Canyon and toward Hanging Lake.
