Phoenix Goodyear Airport is a general aviation reliever field for Phoenix Sky Harbor, sited a few miles west of Phoenix in Goodyear, Arizona. Built as a US Navy air facility during the Second World War, it now serves as a busy centre for airline aircraft storage and maintenance as well as flight training, including United Airlines' Aviate Academy. Its long, single hard runway and uncongested airspace make it a straightforward and interesting VFR destination for simulator pilots exploring the Phoenix area.

Overview

Phoenix Goodyear Airport (KGYR) lies in Goodyear, Arizona, on the western edge of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Operated by the City of Phoenix as a general aviation reliever airport for Phoenix Sky Harbor International, it is notable for hosting long-term storage and maintenance work for airliners from carriers around the world, alongside flight training operations. For a simulator pilot it offers an unusually long single runway, an active general aviation and training scene, and the chance to spot a wide variety of parked commercial jets on the ramp.

Airspace & Location

The airport is located 2.2 miles south of Interstate 10 on Litchfield Road, within the Phoenix, Arizona area. It sits close to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, for which it acts as a designated general aviation reliever field.

Runways

Phoenix Goodyear Airport has a single hard-surfaced, lit runway aligned 03/21. The published landing distances differ by direction, with 8,493 ft available on runway 03 and 6,378 ft on runway 21. There is no ILS approach published for the field.

Radio & Navigation

Goodyear Tower operates on 120.1 MHz, which also serves as the CTAF. ATIS is broadcast on 118.35 MHz, ground control on 121.7 MHz, and UNICOM is available on 122.95 MHz. A remote radio outlet for Prescott Radio is listed on 122.6 MHz.

Joining & Circuit Procedures

The airport operates a voluntary Fly Friendly Program intended to reduce the noise impact of flying operations on surrounding communities, though specific circuit or noise-abatement procedures are not detailed in available sources.

Visual Reference Points

The airport can be identified from the air by its position just south of Interstate 10 along Litchfield Road, on the western fringe of the Phoenix urban area.

History

The airfield was built during the Second World War and officially opened in 1941 as Naval Air Facility Litchfield Park, operated by the United States Navy. Following the closure of NAS Litchfield Park in 1968, the Goodyear company considered using the site for its Aviation Products Division, but the City of Phoenix ultimately purchased the airport in July 1968, establishing it as a general aviation reliever for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

The Airfield Today

Phoenix Goodyear Airport is a major site for the storage and maintenance of airliners, with aircraft from numerous domestic and international carriers regularly parked on its ramps. It provides fuel and support services for government, military and emergency medical service operators, and also handles many arrivals and departures associated with major sporting events in the Phoenix area. The field hosts flight training operations, including CTC Wings, which began training there in 2014, and United Airlines' Aviate Academy, which opened in early 2022 as United's main pilot training centre.
