Manassas Regional Airport/Harry P. Davis Field (KHEF) is a busy Class D general aviation airport in northern Virginia, some five miles southwest of Manassas and 28 miles from Washington, DC. It is the largest general aviation airport in the Commonwealth of Virginia, hosting transient and local GA traffic alongside law enforcement, military, medevac and flight training operations.

Overview

Manassas Regional Airport, also known as Harry P. Davis Field, is a public-use general aviation airport serving the Washington, DC region. Situated five miles southwest of the city of Manassas and about 28 miles from downtown Washington, it is the largest general aviation airport in Virginia. The field handles a steady mix of transient and local GA aircraft, together with law enforcement, military and medevac flights, and supports numerous flight schools, making it a lively and instructive destination for visiting VFR pilots.

Airspace & Location

KHEF lies within Class D airspace controlled by the airport's own tower, with Potomac Approach/Departure providing the surrounding terminal radar service. The airport sits close to the greater Washington, DC airspace complex, roughly 28 miles from the capital, and five miles southwest of Manassas itself.

Runways

The airfield has two parallel hard-surfaced runways. The longer, Runway 16L/34R, is 6191 feet long, lit, and equipped with an ILS on the 16L approach. The shorter parallel runway, 16R/34L, is 3682 feet long and also lit but without an instrument approach. Field elevation is 180 feet.

Radio & Navigation

KHEF Tower and the common traffic advisory frequency operate on 133.1 MHz, with Ground control on 121.8 MHz. Clearance delivery is provided by Potomac on 120.2 MHz, and the airport's ATIS broadcasts on 125.175 MHz. An AWOS is available on 120.35 MHz, supplemented by the KHWY AWOS-3 located about 12 nautical miles southwest. Potomac Approach/Departure works arrivals and departures on 128.525 MHz. An ILS is published for Runway 16L.

Joining & Circuit Procedures

The airport's tower operates from 0630 to 2230 local time. The field has a parallel runway configuration, 16L/34R and 16R/34L, and pilots are advised to review the airport's special taxi instructions and current airport diagram before arrival, as connecting taxiways Bravo 1 through Bravo 6 have recently been renamed. Controllers ask pilots to confirm the runway cleared to ensure correct alignment, particularly relevant during ILS operations when weather is below 800 feet and 2 miles.

History

Harry P. Davis Field has grown into the largest general aviation airport in Virginia, reflecting its role as a key GA hub for the Washington, DC region. Beyond scheduled and transient GA traffic, the airport has long supported law enforcement, military and medevac operations, and is home to numerous flight training schools.

The Airfield Today

KHEF remains a major general aviation centre for the Washington, DC area, with a tower operating 0630 to 2230 local time and an administrative office open 0730 to 1600 local time, Monday to Friday. The airport continues to host multiple flight schools alongside law enforcement, military and medevac users, and pilots are encouraged to consult current NOTAMs and airport diagrams before flying in given periodic taxiway changes.
