Indy South Greenwood Airport is a public-use, city-owned general aviation field in Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana, operated by the City of Greenwood. It sits close to downtown Indianapolis and is used chiefly by piston singles and twins, with a smaller number of jets and helicopters based on the field. Its proximity to the city, combined with an active training and maintenance community, makes it an interesting and accessible stop for the simulator pilot flying light aircraft in the Indianapolis area.
The airport lies in Greenwood, Indiana, about 10 miles (16 km) southeast of Downtown Indianapolis, within the wider Indianapolis terminal area. Indianapolis Approach/Departure and Indianapolis Center frequencies are listed for the field, indicating it operates under the overlying Indianapolis terminal and en-route airspace structure. There is no operating control tower at Greenwood itself.
The airport has one physical runway, 01/19, orientated roughly north-south. It has a hard surface and is lit, measuring approximately 4,996 to 4,998 feet in length on each reciprocal heading. There is no ILS approach, though the airport is noted elsewhere as having GPS and VOR approach procedures available.
Traffic at Indy South Greenwood uses UNICOM/CTAF on 123.0 MHz. Indianapolis Approach/Departure can be reached on 124.95 MHz, and Indianapolis Center on 132.2 MHz. An automated weather observation is available on AWOS-3 at 118.525 MHz. There is no dedicated control tower frequency for the field itself.
Indy South Greenwood Airport, previously known as Greenwood Municipal Airport, was founded in September 1947 and has operated as a public general aviation airport ever since under city ownership. It covers around 208 acres and has grown into a well-used regional field, being named Airport of the Year by Aviation Indiana in 2022.
The airport remains a busy general aviation field, recording around 27,944 aircraft operations in 2022 and hosting 91 based aircraft as of late 2023, comprising mostly single-engine types alongside a handful of twins, jets and helicopters. It is home to three flight schools offering training and aircraft rental, together with aircraft maintenance facilities, and provides both full-service and 24-hour self-serve Jet A and 100LL fuel. On-field amenities for visiting pilots include a crew lounge and flight planning facilities.
