Houma-Terrebonne Airport (KHUM) is a general aviation airport serving Houma, Louisiana, and the surrounding Terrebonne Parish. It is built on the grounds of a former US Navy blimp base and today combines fixed-wing training and charter traffic with a significant helicopter presence supporting offshore oil operations in the Gulf of Mexico, making it an interesting and varied field for a visiting VFR pilot.
The airport lies at approximately N 29 34' 02.65", W 90 39' 37.27" near Houma, Louisiana. New Orleans Approach/Departure is available on 118.9 for arriving and departing traffic transiting the surrounding airspace.
Houma-Terrebonne has two intersecting concrete runways. Runway 18/36 is the main north-south runway, 6,509 feet long, hard-surfaced and lit, equipped with an ILS on runway 18. Runway 12/30 is the crosswind runway, 4,969 feet long, hard-surfaced and lit, served by a non-precision approach.
Ground is on 121.8, with Tower/CTAF on 125.3 and ATIS on 120.25. Clearance Delivery is available on 118.35, and UNICOM on 122.95. New Orleans Approach/Departure operates on 118.9. Locally published navigation aids include the Tibby VORTAC on 112.0 and an ILS on 108.5 serving runway 18. The FAA publishes six instrument approach procedures for the airport.
Air traffic at Houma-Terrebonne is handled by an on-site FAA Level 1, VFR, non-radar control tower on 125.3, operating seven days a week from 0600 to 1900 local (CST). Pilots should expect to work with this tower during its published hours when joining the circuit or transiting the field.
The airfield originated as a US Navy blimp base and has been overseen since April 1958 by the Houma Terrebonne Airport Commission, established by ordinance of what was then the Terrebonne Parish Policing Jury, now the Terrebonne Parish Council, to manage the former Naval Blimp Base as the Houma-Terrebonne Airport and Industrial Park. Runway 18/36 underwent reconstruction in 2006.
The airport is served by two fixed base operators, Apex Jet Center and Simon Aviation Services, offering avgas and jet fuel, maintenance, parking, air charter and rental car services, along with flight instruction. It is also a base for helicopter operators including Bristow Group, PHI Aviation and Westwind Helicopters, which shuttle crews out to oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, giving the field a steady mix of rotary and fixed-wing movements.
