Saginaw County H.W. Browne Airport (KHYX) is a county-owned, public-use general aviation field in Buena Vista Township, just east of Saginaw, Michigan. It offers a full-length lit runway with an ILS approach alongside a shorter crosswind strip, making it a practical training and touring destination for visiting light aircraft. The field traces its origins back over a century and today supports a modest but active general aviation community.

Overview

Saginaw County H.W. Browne Airport is a county-owned, public-use airfield serving Saginaw, Michigan, from its location in Buena Vista Charter Township just east of the city. It is classified by the FAA as a local general aviation facility and is of interest to visiting pilots for its instrument approach, its long history dating back over a century, and its role as a base for local training and general aviation activity.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies in Buena Vista Charter Township, east of the city of Saginaw, Michigan. No control tower is noted at the field itself, and the presence of a published approach/departure frequency suggests it operates within airspace served by a nearby approach facility. Pilots planning a visit should expect to coordinate with that approach service before arrival.

Runways

H.W. Browne Airport has two physical runways. The primary runway, 10/28, is 4,936 feet long with a hard surface and runway lighting; runway 28 is equipped with an ILS. The secondary runway, 05/23, is 2,824 feet (runway 05) and 2,814 feet (runway 23) in length, also hard-surfaced and lit. Field elevation is 597 feet.

Radio & Navigation

The airport is served by an approach/departure frequency of 120.95 MHz. An AWOS-3 automated weather observation is broadcast on 118.325 MHz. A remote radio outlet to Lansing Radio is available on 122.2 MHz. CTAF and unicom operations are conducted on 122.8 MHz. Runway 28 offers an ILS instrument approach.

History

The airfield's origins date back as far as 1912, when it was known as Janes Street Field. It was later operated as Saginaw's Municipal Airport before Saginaw County took it over in the 1970s, renaming it in honour of Harry W. Browne, a local labor and political leader and mortician. In 2016 the county embarked on a project to rebuild and rehabilitate the main runway, then designated 9/27, purchasing land and easements around the airport to support the work; a $2 million Federal Aviation Administration grant followed in 2017 to help fund the rehabilitation. On 26 June 2004 a Beech Model 23 Musketeer was substantially damaged after striking a runway sign during a bounced landing on runway 27, an accident attributed to the pilot's inadequate compensation for gusting wind conditions.

The Airfield Today

The airport covers 293 acres and supports general aviation operations, with roughly 12,000 aircraft movements recorded in 2021, an average of about 33 per day. At that time 41 aircraft were based there, comprising 29 single-engine and 7 multi-engine airplanes, 4 jets and 1 helicopter. A fixed-base operator on the field supplies both avgas and jet fuel and offers general aircraft maintenance, courtesy transportation, a conference room, a crew lounge and shower facilities for visiting pilots and crews.
