George Bush Intercontinental Airport lies north of downtown Houston, Texas, and is one of the busiest and largest airports in the southern United States. With five parallel and crossing runways and full instrument approach coverage, it offers a substantial and demanding destination for the simulator pilot flying into Class B airspace.

Overview

George Bush Intercontinental Airport (KIAH) serves Houston, Texas, as a major hub airport with international customs facilities and a large-scale runway layout. For a simulator pilot it is of interest chiefly for the scale of its operation: five separate physical runways, full ILS coverage on most of them, and continuous airline traffic that makes it a realistic and busy Class B destination to fly into or out of.

Airspace & Location

KIAH sits within Class B controlled airspace over Houston, Texas, at coordinates 29.9844 N, 95.3414 W and a field elevation of 89 feet. As a major hub it also has customs and international arrival facilities, reflecting its role as one of the primary gateways into the region.

Runways

The airfield has five physical runways. Runway 15L/33R is the longest at 11,996 feet, hard-surfaced and lit, with an ILS on the 33R end. Runway 15R/33L is 9,995 feet, hard-surfaced and lit, with an ILS on the 15R end. Runway 09/27 runs 9,974 feet, hard-surfaced and lit, with ILS approaches available on both ends. Runway 08R/26L is 9,395 feet, hard-surfaced and lit, also with ILS on both ends. Runway 08L/26R is 8,990 feet, hard-surfaced and lit, with ILS on both ends as well.

Radio & Navigation

KIAH is a fully controlled field with instrument approach capability (ILS) on most runway ends. Published frequencies are: ATIS 124.05 MHz; Tower 120.725 MHz; Ground 118.575 MHz; Approach 120.05 MHz; Departure 119.7 MHz; Clearance Delivery 128.1 MHz; UNICOM 122.95 MHz. Additional listed frequencies include Departure 28.14 MHz, Tower 29.02 MHz, and a remote radio outlet at Montgomery County on 122.4 MHz.

The Airfield Today

KIAH continues to operate as a major hub airport with customs and international arrival handling. Given its size and traffic density, pilots planning a visit in the simulator should expect full airline-level air traffic control procedures rather than a general aviation joining pattern.
