It is unusual among fields of its size for combining subsidised scheduled airline service with an active general-aviation community, and it also acts as a hub for a regional freight operator. For a simulator pilot, the appeal lies in its long, ILS-equipped primary runway capable of handling regional jets, its crosswind runway for lighter traffic, and its scenic setting along the Menominee River amid the forests of the Upper Peninsula.
The airport lies about three miles west of the central business district of Iron Mountain, adjacent to the town of Kingsford, in Dickinson County, Michigan. It sits close to the Wisconsin border, serving the bordering communities of Aurora, Florence and Niagara as well as the Michigan towns of Iron Mountain, Kingsford and Norway. En route traffic in the area is worked by Minneapolis Center, with Green Bay Radio also available for flight service communications.
Ford Airport has two paved, lit runways. The primary runway, 01/19, is 6,463 feet long with a hard surface and is equipped with an ILS on runway 01. The secondary runway, 13/31, is approximately 3,760 feet long, also hard-surfaced and lit, providing a crosswind option for lighter aircraft.
Weather is available on the ASOS at 119.025 MHz. En route traffic is worked by Minneapolis Center on 121.25 MHz, with Green Bay Radio available on 111.2 MHz for flight service. Airport traffic, both CTAF and UNICOM, is on 122.8 MHz. Runway 01 is served by an ILS approach.
Aerodrome traffic should monitor and make position calls on the CTAF/UNICOM frequency of 122.8 MHz, as no separate air traffic control tower service is indicated for the field.
The airport sits along the Menominee River, a useful linear landmark when approaching from the south or east. Iron Mountain's central business district lies about three miles to the east, with the town of Kingsford immediately adjacent to the airport itself, and the Wisconsin border communities of Aurora, Florence and Niagara lying just to the south across the state line.
Ford Airport is a county-owned public-use facility that has long served the Dickinson County area, including Iron Mountain, Kingsford and Norway in Michigan and neighbouring Wisconsin communities. It has operated as a hub for the FedEx Feeder operator CSA Air and is included in the FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2021-2025, categorised as a non-hub primary commercial service facility. The Experimental Aircraft Association hosts community events at the field, most notably Ford Airport Days. In 2020 the airport received US Department of Transportation CARES Act funding to help offset the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on operations.
Ford Airport currently offers daily Delta Connection service, operated by SkyWest, to Minneapolis-St Paul and Detroit. General aviation is supported by a full-service fixed-base operator offering aviation fuel, aircraft parking and hangars, aircraft rental, courtesy cars and pilot lounges. The field maintains an Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting team trained to Index A standard. As of late 2023 the airport had 36 based aircraft, comprising 22 single-engine and 8 multi-engine piston aircraft, 5 jets and 1 helicopter.
