Kissimmee Gateway Airport (KISM/ISM) is a busy general aviation reliever field on the southwest edge of the Orlando metropolitan area, close to Walt Disney World and the Orange County Convention Center. It offers two lit, hard-surfaced runways, a Category I ILS, and an operational control tower, making it a practical and well-equipped destination for visiting simulator pilots.

Overview

Kissimmee Gateway Airport, formerly Kissimmee Municipal Airport, is a City of Kissimmee-owned public airport in Osceola County, Florida, serving the Greater Orlando area. It does not host scheduled passenger service but is a significant general aviation hub, home to a notable warbird restoration facility and a wide range of light aircraft, jets and helicopters, making it an interesting and varied destination for a VFR flight.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies in Kissimmee, Florida, about 16 nautical miles southwest of downtown Orlando, roughly eight miles south of Walt Disney World and ten miles south of the Orlando/Orange County Convention Center. It functions as a general aviation reliever airport to Orlando International Airport and has an operational control tower.

Runways

Kissimmee Gateway has two paved, lit runways. Runway 15/33 is 6,001 feet long with a hard surface and is equipped with an ILS on the 15 approach. Runway 06/24 is 4,994 feet long, also hard-surfaced and lit. Field elevation is 75 feet.

Radio & Navigation

Radio contact is available on CTAF/Tower 124.45 MHz, with Ground on 121.7 MHz and Clearance Delivery on 119.95 MHz. Orlando Approach/Departure works the field on 119.4 MHz, and UNICOM is available on 122.95 MHz. Weather can be obtained from AWOS on 128.775 MHz. Runway 15 has an ILS along with MALSF approach lighting; REILs are fitted to runways 06, 24 and 33, PAPIs serve runways 06, 15, 24 and 33, and MIRL lighting covers both runway pairs.

Visual Reference Points

Kissimmee Gateway's position close to Walt Disney World and the Orlando/Orange County Convention Center makes both prominent visual landmarks for pilots orienting themselves toward the field from the north.

History

The airfield opened in April 1940 under the United States Army Air Forces as Kissimmee Army Airfield, forming part of the Air University's Army Air Forces School of Applied Tactics, a tactical combat simulation school covering central and northern Florida. Training moved to southern California in January 1944, and the airfield's military role was wound down before it closed on 7 July 1945, returning to civilian use later that year. In the late 1970s the field saw limited scheduled service on Air Sunshine to Miami and Tampa, and DayJet operated an on-demand air taxi service to a dozen cities until suspending operations in September 2008.

The Airfield Today

Today Kissimmee Gateway is a busy general aviation reliever airport for Orlando International, handling a high volume of light aircraft, jet and helicopter movements. It hosts a major facility dedicated to restoring classic World War II-era military aircraft to flying condition, alongside flight training operations such as Aviator College and Stallion 51. The field has an operational control tower and a Category I ILS on its main runway.
