Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport (KJVL) is a Rock County-owned general aviation field lying southwest of Janesville and north of Beloit in southern Wisconsin. It offers three long, lit hard-surfaced runways, two of them served by ILS approaches, making it a capable base for both training flights and business aviation despite carrying no scheduled airline service today.
Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport, known by its ICAO code KJVL and IATA code JVL, is a public airport owned and operated by Rock County, Wisconsin. It was formerly known as Rock County Airport and, despite its regional name, has no scheduled commercial passenger service today, functioning instead as a national general aviation facility under the FAA's airport classification system. For a simulator pilot it is notable for its unusually generous runway lengths for a general aviation field, its ILS approaches, and a colourful history that once included airline service and a major air show.
The airport sits in the Town of Rock, Rock County, southwest of Janesville and north of Beloit in southern Wisconsin. It lies within range of Rockford Approach/Departure control, which handles arriving and departing traffic in the area, and the field itself is worked by Janesville Tower, indicating controlled airspace around the aerodrome during tower hours.
The airport has three physical runways, all hard-surfaced and lit. Runway 14/32 is the longest at 7,257 feet, with an ILS serving runway 32. Runway 04/22 is 6,660/6,659 feet long and carries an ILS on runway 04. Runway 18/36, the shortest, measures 4,709 feet. Field elevation is 804 feet.
Janesville Tower operates on 118.8 MHz, which also serves as the CTAF. Ground control and clearance delivery both use 121.65 MHz. ATIS is broadcast on 128.25 MHz, and UNICOM is available on 122.95 MHz. Rockford Approach/Departure can be reached on 121 MHz, and a Green Bay radio outlet is listed on 114.3 MHz. The field has published ILS approaches for runways 32 and 04.
Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport opened in April 1946. Although Rock County farmland was used for contract glider-pilot training by the United States Army Air Forces in 1942, that training took place on separate turf strips elsewhere in the county and not on the site of the present airport. The airport has at various times hosted scheduled airline service: Wisconsin Central Airlines began flights in May 1950, and later carriers including Republic Airlines, Midstate Airlines, and Mid-Continent Airlines (later American Central Airlines) served Janesville with connections to Chicago-O'Hare, with the last scheduled service ending in July 1985. For many years the airport was also home to the Southern Wisconsin AirFest, an annual air show that drew major military display teams including the US Air Force Thunderbirds, the US Navy Blue Angels, and the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, before the event was discontinued after the 2012 season.
The airport covers some 1,343 acres and, as of August 2024, had 87 based aircraft comprising single- and multi-engine piston types, jets, and helicopters. In the twelve months to December 2021 it recorded 54,744 aircraft operations, averaging 150 per day and dominated by general aviation traffic. There is no scheduled passenger service. An FBO on the field, Revv Aviation (formerly Janesville Jet Center), provides fuel, hangar parking, and other general aviation support services for visiting and based pilots.
