Lebanon Municipal Airport (KLEB) is a city-owned, tower-controlled airfield in western New Hampshire, three nautical miles west of Lebanon and close to the Vermont border, serving the Dartmouth College and Upper Valley region. It offers a long asphalt runway pair with an ILS approach, making it a useful and well-equipped destination for both general aviation and commercial traffic in a scenic corner of northern New England.

Overview

Lebanon Municipal Airport, also known simply as Lebanon Airport, is a city-owned public-use aerodrome serving Lebanon, New Hampshire, and the surrounding Upper Valley and Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee region. It is the northernmost commercial airport in New Hampshire and the only field north of Manchester with an air traffic control tower, which makes it a notable and relatively substantial stop for a simulator pilot exploring the region. Commercial service today is provided by Cape Air under the Essential Air Service programme, alongside a mix of general aviation, corporate and rotary traffic.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies about three nautical miles west of the central business district of Lebanon, in Grafton County, New Hampshire, close to the Vermont border and just off Interstate 89 south of its junction with Interstate 91. Nearby towns and landmarks include Hanover, New Hampshire, and White River Junction, Vermont, with Dartmouth College and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center both in the immediate area. It is a tower-controlled field, the only one north of Manchester in New Hampshire with air traffic control.

Runways

Lebanon has two paved runways. Runway 07/25 is 5,466 feet (07) and 5,450 feet (25) long, hard-surfaced and lit. Runway 18/36 is 5,195 feet long in both directions, hard-surfaced and lit, with an instrument landing system serving Runway 18. Field elevation is 574 feet.

Radio & Navigation

Boston Approach/Departure is available on 134.7 MHz. The airport broadcasts ASOS/ATIS on 118.65 MHz. The tower operates on 125.95 MHz, which also serves as the CTAF, with ground control on 121.6 MHz. A remote radio outlet for Bangor Radio is available on 122.2 MHz, and UNICOM is on 122.95 MHz. An ILS approach serves Runway 18.

Joining & Circuit Procedures

Lebanon is a tower-controlled airport, so arriving and departing traffic should expect to work with air traffic control on the published tower frequency rather than operate on a self-announce basis; the CTAF and tower share the same frequency, 125.95 MHz, with ground handled separately on 121.6 MHz.

Visual Reference Points

Useful visual landmarks for locating the field include the junction of Interstate 89 and Interstate 91 immediately to the north and east, and the town of White River Junction, Vermont, just across the state line. Dartmouth College, in nearby Hanover, is another prominent landmark for pilots orienting themselves in the local area.

History

The airport traces its origins to a special town meeting in February 1941, at which Lebanon's Selectmen were authorised to purchase up to 750 acres on Slack Hill for the field. The federal government transferred the airport to the town in June 1944. After the Second World War, veteran aviator Sumner Atherton established Connecticut Valley Airways and in 1947 won a 20-year lease to operate the airport, going on to serve as Airport Manager from 1950 to 1969 and overseeing its expansion. Scheduled airline service began in 1948, when Northeast Airlines started a daily Douglas DC-3 round trip linking New York City with Montreal via Lebanon and other Vermont and New Hampshire stops. By 1954 the airport handled around 8,000 enplanements a year. In 1964 Northeast operated direct one-stop Douglas DC-6B service to New York's John F. Kennedy Airport via Keene, and by 1969 was running up to ten flights a day using Fairchild Hiller FH-227 turboprops to LaGuardia, Boston, Montpelier/Barre, Manchester and Keene. Northeast merged into Delta Air Lines in 1972, and Delta continued FH-227 service to LaGuardia and JFK before withdrawing from the market by 1975, after which Air New England took over services with Beechcraft 99, de Havilland Twin Otter and FH-227 aircraft, operating up to fourteen flights a day. In more recent decades, Colgan Air operated as US Airways Express with nonstop flights to New York LaGuardia until service ended in November 2008, and Cape Air began serving Boston on 2 November 2008.

The Airfield Today

Lebanon Municipal Airport remains a regional, tower-controlled airport handling a mix of commercial, corporate and general aviation traffic, including based helicopters. Commercial airline service is provided by Cape Air, subsidised under the Essential Air Service programme, currently using Tecnam P2012 Traveller aircraft on routes to Boston and New York. Granite Air Center, the field's fixed-base operator, and Sharkey's Helicopters are based on the north ramp, and the airport offers T-hangars and corporate hangars for based and visiting aircraft. Runway 18 is served by a precision ILS approach.
