Leesburg International Airport is a general aviation field in Lake County, Florida, three miles northeast of the city of Leesburg and about 35 miles northwest of Orlando. Operated by the City of Leesburg, it offers a tower-controlled service during the day and two lit hard-surfaced runways, making it a useful and historically interesting stop for VFR pilots in the central Florida area.

Overview

Leesburg International Airport is a city-owned general aviation airport in Lake County, Florida, sited a few miles northeast of downtown Leesburg and roughly 35 miles northwest of Orlando. It traces its origins to a wartime military training field and today serves as a busy general aviation base with a control tower, fire and rescue cover, and a fixed-base operator, making it an accessible and well-equipped destination for visiting simulator pilots.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies within the central Florida general aviation environment northwest of Orlando's terminal airspace, with Orlando Approach/Departure providing the wider air traffic service on 121.1 MHz. Leesburg itself has its own control tower during published hours. The field is located about three miles northeast of Leesburg's central business district and approximately 35 miles northwest of Orlando, placing it among the area's busier reliever and general aviation airports rather than under a major terminal control area.

Runways

Leesburg International has two paved, lit runways. Runway 13/31 is the longer of the pair, with the 13 threshold giving a landing length of 6,004 ft and the 31 threshold 5,893 ft, both on a hard surface. Runway 04/22 is shorter, offering 4,954 ft from the 04 threshold and 4,640 ft from the 22 threshold, also hard-surfaced and lit. There is no ILS approach at the field.

Radio & Navigation

Leesburg Tower operates on 119.35 MHz, with Leesburg Ground on 121.725 MHz and clearance delivery on 120.225 MHz available when the tower is closed. The airport's ATIS broadcasts on 134.325 MHz, and Orlando Approach/Departure can be reached on 121.1 MHz. When the tower is closed, the field's CTAF/UNICOM frequency of 122.725 MHz applies. The tower is staffed daily from 0700 to 1900 local time, with the tower frequency doubling as the CTAF outside those hours.

History

Construction of the airport began on 24 November 1941 as a Works Progress Administration project, and the field was commissioned in January 1943 as Leesburg Army Airfield. It served as a training airfield for the United States Army Air Forces under the Army Air Force School of Applied Tactics based at Orlando Army Air Base. Following the end of the Second World War the airfield was closed by the military and handed over to the City of Leesburg, which has owned and operated it since.

The Airfield Today

Leesburg International Airport today is a busy general aviation field, recording over 82,000 aircraft operations a year, the great majority general aviation, with 128 aircraft based on the field including single and multi-engine types, jets and helicopters. The airport has been designated a User Fee Airport by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, allowing it to serve as a first port of entry for aircraft returning to the United States from abroad, and it maintains a fire and rescue station staffed around the clock. SunAir Aviation operates as the field's fixed-base operator, open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., offering a pilot's lounge, car rental, courtesy transport, tie-down space and pilot training. Prior permission is required for the airport's customs processing service for international arrivals.
