Pilots should monitor and use 122.7 MHz as the CTAF/UNICOM frequency for self-announcing intentions in the traffic pattern. Oakland Center can be contacted on 132.2 MHz for en route services. The airport has no ILS or published instrument approach navaids noted.

Little River Airport was built by the US Navy in 1945 as an outlying landing field supporting the Naval Auxiliary Air Station at Santa Rosa, itself part of a network of training airfields serving Naval Air Station Alameda. In the late 1940s the field offered scheduled commercial air service, operated by Southwest Airways using surplus World War II Douglas DC-3s. The airport was formerly identified as O48 before adopting its current FAA designation of LLR.
The airport is owned by Mendocino County and covers approximately 548 acres. In a twelve-month period around 2004 it recorded some 6,300 aircraft operations, averaging 17 per day, with the great majority being general aviation traffic and a small proportion of air taxi movements. It continues to serve as a general aviation airfield for the Little River area on the Mendocino coast.
