It offers a very long primary runway, full instrument approach capability and a mix of general aviation, air taxi and military training traffic, making it an interesting and demanding destination for the VFR sim pilot.

The combination of a 10,000-foot-plus runway, an instrument landing system and active fighter operations makes it a distinctive field for a simulator pilot to visit.
The airport is located in Klamath County, Oregon, five miles southeast of the city of Klamath Falls, which owns and operates it. It functions as a joint civil-military aerodrome, sharing its runways and airspace with Kingsley Field Air National Guard Base. Kingsley Approach/Departure provides approach and departure control on 123.675 MHz, and Kingsley Tower controls the field on 118.2 MHz.
The airport has two physical runways. Runway 14/32 is a hard-surfaced, lit runway 10,290 feet long, with an ILS serving runway 32. Runway 07/25 is also hard-surfaced and lit, measuring 4,933 feet on runway 07 and 4,726 feet on runway 25.
Kingsley Approach/Departure works traffic on 123.675 MHz, with the airport ATIS broadcasting on 126.5 MHz. Kingsley Tower controls the field on 118.2 MHz, which also serves as the CTAF; ground movements are handled on 121.9 MHz. Unicom is available on 122.95 MHz, and a remote communications outlet for McMinnville Radio operates on 122.6 MHz. Air National Guard base operations use 38.895 MHz. The field is equipped with an instrument landing system serving runway 32.
The field operates as a joint civil-military airport with an active control tower, so pilots should expect to work with Kingsley Tower and Kingsley Approach/Departure when arriving or departing, alongside military traffic including fighter operations from the resident 173d Fighter Wing.
The airport traces its origins to 1928, when Klamath Falls citizens approved bond funding to build Klamath Falls Municipal Airport, initially with gravel runways and a single fixed-base operator. In 1942 the site was selected for a Naval Air Station, later named NAS Klamath Falls, before reverting to civil use in 1945. In 1954 the airport became a U.S. Air Force Air Defense Command base and a joint-use civil-military location, with the 408th Fighter Group arriving to operate Mighty Mouse rocket and radar-equipped North American F-86 Sabres. In 1957 the field was dedicated as Kingsley Field in honour of 2nd Lieutenant David R. Kingsley, an Oregonian killed in action on 23 June 1944 during a B-17 bombing mission over Ploiesti, Romania. Successive fighter-interceptor squadrons flying the F-101B Voodoo and F-106A/B Delta Dart operated from the base through the 1960s and into 1971. Control passed to Tactical Air Command in 1976, and in 1978 the facilities were transferred from the active-duty Air Force to the Oregon Air National Guard. The airport's name was changed to Crater Lake-Klamath Regional Airport in 2013. In August 2020 it was announced that Kingsley Field would host the Air Force's first F-15EX formal training unit from 2022, though these plans were revised in May 2023 in favour of a Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II training unit, with around twenty aircraft expected to be based there from approximately 2025.
The airport remains home to the Oregon Air National Guard's 173d Fighter Wing, which specialises in advanced air-to-air combat training for Regular Air Force and Air National Guard F-15 pilots and hosts joint and combined air combat exercises, as well as a USAF flight surgeon training school. It is also home to the Klamath Falls Interagency Fire Center, the Klamath Falls Airtanker Base, and the Tanker 61 Memorial, which commemorates a firebomber lost in 1992. As of April 2025 the airport is open on weekdays year round for public use, with a flight school, car rental services, and airline refuelling on site; fuel prices are around six dollars, and a landing fee is charged to incoming aircraft.
