Lonesome Pine Airport is a public general aviation field near Wise in southwestern Virginia, sitting high in the Appalachians at an elevation of 2,674 feet. It offers a single hard-surfaced, lit runway with an ILS approach, making it a useful stop for pilots operating in this mountainous corner of the state.

Overview

Lonesome Pine Airport serves the town of Wise, Virginia, and the surrounding Cumberland Plateau region of southwestern Virginia. It is a public-use general aviation airport owned and operated by the Cumberland Airport Commission, catering to local and transient business and general aviation traffic. For a simulator pilot, its high elevation and mountainous surroundings make it a distinctive destination for practising approaches into terrain-challenged airfields.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies approximately three miles northeast of the central business district of Wise, Virginia, in Wise County. It sits within the Indianapolis Center's area of jurisdiction, with the enroute frequency 126.57 MHz covering the region. No specific controlled airspace class or nearby major terminal airspace is noted in the available information, consistent with its status as a small general aviation field in a rural, mountainous part of the state.

Runways

The airport has a single physical runway, 06/24, oriented northeast-southwest. Runway 24 is 5,381 feet long and runway 06 is 5,259 feet long; both are hard-surfaced and lit. Runway 24 is equipped with an ILS approach.

Radio & Navigation

Traffic and airfield information is available on the CTAF/UNICOM frequency 123 MHz. An automated weather observing system (AWOS 3) broadcasts on 118.6 MHz. Indianapolis Center provides enroute radar service on 126.57 MHz. The field has a published ILS approach to runway 24.

History

Lonesome Pine Airport was once served by scheduled commercial airline service operated by Appalachian Airlines. It has also hosted public aviation events, including "Wings over Wise" and, more recently, "Let Freedom Ring". The airport covers 417 acres and is owned and operated by the Cumberland Airport Commission.

The Airfield Today

The airport continues to support general aviation and business flying in the Wise, Virginia area, operating Monday to Saturday from 9 AM to 6 PM under the management of Joseph Teague. It remains a public-use field serving local and transient general aviation traffic in southwestern Virginia.
