South Haven Area Regional Airport (KLWA) is a small public-use general aviation field three miles south of South Haven, Michigan, on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. Owned by the city through the South Haven Area Regional Airport Authority, it offers a paved main runway and a turf crosswind strip, making it a popular stop for local and touring light aircraft. The airport was named Michigan's General Aviation Airport of the Year in 2019.

Overview

South Haven Area Regional Airport is a publicly owned general aviation airport serving the South Haven area of southwestern Michigan. It is operated by the city through the South Haven Area Regional Airport Authority and supports light single and multi-engine training and touring traffic. The field is of interest to visiting pilots for its mix of a lit hard-surface runway and a turf crosswind strip, and it was recognised in 2019 with Michigan's Airport of the Year Award in the General Aviation category.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies about three miles south of the town of South Haven, Michigan, close to the Lake Michigan shoreline. It is a non-towered field operating on a common traffic advisory frequency, with Chicago Center and Lansing Radio available nearby for en-route and flight-following services.

Runways

KLWA has two physical runways. Runway 05/23 is 4,793 feet long, hard-surfaced and lit. Runway 14/32 is a shorter 3,266-foot grass strip without lighting. Field elevation is 653 feet.

Radio & Navigation

The airport uses CTAF/UNICOM on 122.8 MHz. An automated weather observation is broadcast on AWOS-3, 118.025 MHz. Chicago Center can be reached on 128.5 MHz, and Lansing Radio is available on 112.1 MHz. There is no ILS at the field.

History

South Haven Area Regional Airport is publicly owned by the city of South Haven through the South Haven Area Regional Airport Authority. In 2019 it received the Airport of the Year Award in the General Aviation Airport Category from the Michigan Department of Transportation, in recognition of sustained excellence in contribution to aviation progress in the state. The field has seen a number of recorded landing and takeoff incidents over the years, including crosswind-related runway excursions and a fatal accident near the airport in August 2022, reflecting the mix of paved and grass-runway operations typical of the site.

The Airfield Today

The airport handles solely general aviation traffic, with around 27,000 aircraft operations a year and 40 aircraft based on the field, comprising 36 single-engine and 4 multi-engine types. A fixed-base operator on site sells both avgas and jet fuel and provides general maintenance, courtesy and rental cars, a conference room, a crew lounge and snooze rooms for visiting pilots and crews.
