Harbor Springs Airport (KMGN) is a small general-aviation field on the M-119 corridor a few miles east of downtown Harbor Springs, Michigan, close to the shores of Little Traverse Bay. It is an uncontrolled, unicom-served airport with a single lit asphalt runway, popular with local flying clubs, transient GA traffic and a resident skydiving operation.
Harbor Springs Airport is a public-use general aviation airfield serving the resort community of Harbor Springs in Emmet County, northern Michigan. It is owned by the City of Harbor Springs and operated under lease by the Harbor-Petoskey Area Airport Authority, a joint municipal body representing several surrounding townships and the neighbouring city of Petoskey. The field has no scheduled airline service and is classed by the FAA as a local general aviation facility; it also hosts a skydiving operation recognised by the U.S. Parachute Association, which sim pilots operating in the area should be aware of.
KMGN lies about three miles east of the central business district of Harbor Springs, in Little Traverse Township, close to the north shore of Little Traverse Bay on Lake Michigan. The airport is uncontrolled, with no operating tower, and traffic is coordinated by pilots on the common frequency rather than through ATC. It is reachable by road from M-119, which also gives a useful visual cue for pilots orienting themselves toward the field.
The airfield has a single physical runway, 10/28, hard-surfaced and lit. Runway 10 is 3,699 feet long and Runway 28 is 3,690 feet long. There is no ILS or other precision instrument approach aid at the field.
Pilots should use the common traffic advisory frequency and unicom on 122.8 MHz for airfield operations. Automated weather is available on the AWOS-3 frequency of 119.925 MHz. En-route traffic in the area may be in contact with Minneapolis Center on 134.6 MHz. There is no control tower at Harbor Springs, and no ILS is published for the runway.
As an uncontrolled field, Harbor Springs is operated on a self-announce basis using the CTAF/unicom frequency of 122.8 MHz, with pilots making standard position calls to coordinate with other traffic in the pattern.
The airport sits close to the shoreline of Little Traverse Bay and is accessed from M-119, both useful visual references when inbound from the Harbor Springs or Petoskey area. The town of Harbor Springs itself lies a short distance to the west of the field.
Harbor Springs Municipal Airport has long served as the general aviation gateway for the Harbor Springs and Petoskey area, and is listed in the FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems as a local general aviation facility. Its single runway and unicom-only operation reflect its role as a community airfield rather than a commercial hub. The field has been the site of a small number of recorded accidents over the years, including a January 2005 aborted takeoff involving airframe icing, a January 2007 landing accident during gusty conditions, and an August 2015 night approach accident, each investigated for probable cause and serving as reminders of the field's exposure to challenging winter and night-flying conditions typical of the region.
The airport remains an active general aviation field, staffed daily from 8 am until dusk. A fixed-base operator on the field sells fuel and offers courtesy cars, a conference room, crew lounge and snooze rooms for visiting pilots. As of the most recent published figures, the airport recorded around 16,700 aircraft operations annually, with 19 aircraft based there, split between single-engine piston aircraft, one multi-engine aircraft and one jet. The field also supports a USPA-recognised skydiving operation, which pilots transiting the area should note.
