It is home to several local flight schools, air charter operators, aircraft maintenance providers and the Marco Island Squadron of the United States Civil Air Patrol, giving it a busy, small-airport character that will appeal to visiting VFR pilots.
The airfield lies in Naples, Collier County, Florida, about four miles northeast of the central business district of Marco Island, and is convenient to Naples, Goodland and the Isles of Capri. The field is uncontrolled, with traffic advisories handled locally on CTAF/UNICOM and approach and departure services provided remotely by Fort Myers Approach/Departure.
The airport has one physical runway, 17/35, with a hard surface. Runway 17 is 4,985 ft long and Runway 35 is 4,984 ft long; both are lit. There is no ILS at the field.
Fort Myers Approach/Departure works traffic on 119.75 MHz. Clearance delivery is available on 120.8 MHz, and the automated weather observation (AWOS-3) broadcasts on 120.075 MHz. CTAF/UNICOM for local traffic and airport advisories is 122.8 MHz. Published instrument approaches make use of VOR/DME and GPS procedures referenced to the Cypress navaid, though there is no ILS (source: Collier County Airport Authority).
Runway lighting at the field is pilot-controlled, allowing arriving or departing pilots to activate it as required. The airport authority notes no Stage 2 noise restrictions apply to operations there (source: Collier County Airport Authority).
The airfield sits close to Marco Island itself, with Goodland and the Isles of Capri nearby, giving pilots recognisable coastal landmarks when approaching from the south or west; the field is about four miles northeast of the Marco Island business district.
The airport traces its origins to a temporary airstrip built on Marco Island itself in 1965 by the Deltona Corporation to bring in prospective homebuyers. A newer airport was built on the island near what is now San Marco Road in 1968, with Naples Airlines providing service until 1972, when Deltona created its own carrier, Marco Island Airways, which operated as the island's exclusive airline until ceasing operations in 1986. A new terminal building opened on the island site in 1973, but the island airport was decommissioned in 1975 and operations moved to the current mainland site. The present airport opened in September 1976 with a 5,000 ft runway and ramp space designed to accommodate private jets and Marco Island Airways' Martin 404 aircraft. Facing financial difficulties in the early 1980s, the Deltona Corporation handed the airport deed to the state of Florida, which subsequently leased it to Collier County. The Collier County Airport Authority was created in 1993 to develop and manage the field. Commercial service ended in 1987 when Provincetown-Boston Airlines withdrew. Taxiway A, connecting the end of Runway 35 to the ramp and removing the need to backtrack along the runway, was built between 2010 and 2012.
Today the airport functions as a general aviation field supporting local flight training, air charter operations and aircraft maintenance, and it hosts the Marco Island Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol. It has 37 based aircraft, predominantly single-engine types, though this number can triple during the busy winter season from November to May. A new two-story terminal building was constructed between 2018 and 2020 after the previous terminal was found to sit too close to Runway 17/35.
