Pilots should be mindful of the high field elevation and mountainous terrain when planning approaches and departures.
The airport has a single physical runway, 09/27, measuring 6,988 feet in length with a hard (asphalt) surface. Both runway ends are lit, but there is no ILS approach available at the field.
Weather information is available via AWOS on 118.05 MHz. Traffic is coordinated on the CTAF/UNICOM frequency of 122.8 MHz, indicating there is no control tower and the field operates as an uncontrolled airport. Oakland Center can be reached on 125.75 MHz for en-route or flight-following purposes, with an additional remote communications outlet, Riverside Radio, available on 122.15 MHz.
Mammoth Mountain is a prominent visual landmark near the airport and features in views taken from the field, making it a useful reference for pilots inbound from the west. The airport sits close to US Highway 395, which runs along the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada and can assist with visual navigation to the field.
The airfield was originally built by the United States Army during the Second World War as an auxiliary landing strip. After the war, Mono County acquired part of the site from the federal government. The runway was progressively lengthened over the following decades: extended to 5,000 feet by 100 feet in 1965, to 6,500 feet in 1971, and to its current 7,000-foot length by 100 feet in the early 1980s. The airport underwent several name changes, being known at various times as Mammoth Lakes Airport and Mammoth-June Lakes Airport, before the Town of Mammoth Lakes renamed it Mammoth Yosemite Airport in 2000. A succession of commuter airlines served the field from the 1970s onward, including Trans Sierra Airlines, Sierra Pacific Airlines, Air Sierra, Wings West Airlines, Mojave Airlines, Alpha Air and Sierra Mountain Airways, flying to destinations such as Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Reno, Fresno and the Bay Area with a variety of piston and turboprop aircraft. Alpha Air later operated as a Trans World Express carrier on behalf of TWA. The Town of Mammoth Lakes acquired the airport from Mono County in 1993. United Express provided scheduled service from December 2010, becoming year-round, before moving all operations to nearby Eastern Sierra Regional Airport in Bishop in December 2021 due to weather-related reliability issues.
The airport remains owned and operated by the Town of Mammoth Lakes and is used mainly for general aviation, with a small number of based aircraft. Advanced Air began seasonal scheduled Part 135 charter service in November 2021, operating Dornier 328JET regional jets to Hawthorne and Carlsbad in California. The airport has a terminal development master plan intended to expand operations and accommodate larger aircraft, including a new terminal building, airline apron and deicing apron. Pilots should be aware that the field operates without a control tower, using CTAF/UNICOM procedures.
