Pocono Mountains Municipal Airport is a public general-aviation field two miles northwest of Mount Pocono, in Monroe County, Pennsylvania, owned by the Pocono Mountains Municipal Airport Authority. It offers two lit asphalt runways at just over 1,900 feet elevation, making it a straightforward VFR destination in the Pocono resort region for light aircraft and helicopters.

Overview

Pocono Mountains Municipal Airport (KMPO) is a public airfield lying two miles northwest of the town of Mount Pocono, in Coolbaugh Township, Monroe County, Pennsylvania. It is owned and operated by the Pocono Mountains Municipal Airport Authority and serves as the general aviation gateway to the Pocono Mountains resort area, handling light singles, twins and helicopters rather than any scheduled airline traffic.

Airspace & Location

The airfield sits in the Pocono Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania, two miles northwest of Mount Pocono itself. Traffic in the surrounding airspace is worked by Wilkes-Barre Approach/Departure, whose frequency is published for the field, indicating KMPO lies within the approach control area associated with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to the northwest.

Runways

Pocono Mountains Municipal has two paved, lit runways. Runway 05/23 is 3,955 feet long (given as 3,955 ft on the 05 threshold and 3,954 ft on the 23 threshold), hard-surfaced. Runway 13/31 is the longer of the pair, listed as 4,469 feet from the 13 threshold and 4,969 feet from the 31 threshold, also hard-surfaced and lit. Field elevation is 1,886 feet. There is no ILS at the airport.

Radio & Navigation

KMPO has no control tower; the airport is served by CTAF/UNICOM on 122.7 MHz. An ASOS automated weather observation is available on 120.275 MHz. Wilkes-Barre Approach/Departure can be reached on 126.3 MHz, and a clearance delivery frequency of 125.3 MHz is also published for the field.

Joining & Circuit Procedures

As a non-towered airfield, KMPO relies on pilots self-announcing and coordinating on the CTAF/UNICOM frequency of 122.7 MHz for arrivals, departures and traffic advisories.

History

The airport is owned by the Pocono Mountains Municipal Airport Authority and has long served as the region's general aviation facility. In the year ending August 2011 it recorded 19,850 aircraft operations, an average of 54 per day, of which 98.5 percent were general aviation and 1.5 percent military. At that time 19 aircraft were based on the field, made up of 79 percent single-engine types, 10.5 percent multi-engine aircraft and 10.5 percent helicopters, spread across the airport's 275-acre site.

The Airfield Today

KMPO continues to function as a general aviation airport supporting a mix of single-engine, multi-engine and helicopter traffic based at or transiting through the Pocono Mountains area. It remains a public-use, non-towered field under the Pocono Mountains Municipal Airport Authority.
