Sullivan County International Airport (KMSV) is a county-owned general aviation field in the Town of Bethel, New York, some seven miles northwest of Monticello in the heart of the Catskill Mountains. It offers a single long, lit runway with an ILS approach, making it a useful and well-equipped destination for visiting piston and business aircraft in an otherwise quiet corner of upstate New York.

Overview

Sullivan County International Airport serves the Monticello and White Lake area of the Catskill Region in upstate New York. It is publicly owned by Sullivan County and administered by the county's Division of Public Works. The airport is Part 139 certified and capable of handling business jets, which, combined with its long paved runway and ILS approach, makes it an interesting and capable stop for a simulator pilot exploring general aviation fields in the region.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies in the Town of Bethel, Sullivan County, New York, about seven miles northwest of the village of Monticello and roughly ninety miles northwest of New York City. It sits close to White Lake and Liberty, and near the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, the site of the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival. Traffic in the area is worked by New York Approach/Departure on 132.75 MHz.

Runways

The field has one physical runway, 15/33, a hard-surfaced and lit strip roughly 5,990 to 5,994 feet long. Runway 15 is equipped with an ILS approach, giving instrument pilots a precision option into the field; runway 33 is the reciprocal lit runway without an instrument approach.

Radio & Navigation

Sullivan County is served by an Air/Departure frequency of 132.75 MHz used for New York Approach/Departure, an AWOS-3 automated weather observation on 134.025 MHz, a clearance delivery frequency of 121.6 MHz, and UNICOM/CTAF on 122.8 MHz for local traffic advisories. Runway 15 carries an ILS for instrument approaches.

Visual Reference Points

The Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, site of the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival, and the nearby communities of White Lake and Liberty serve as recognisable ground features for pilots orienting themselves toward the field, which lies northwest of Monticello in the Catskill Mountains.

History

The airport was built in the 1960s, with construction described as completed in 1969, and has since grown into a Part 139 certified facility capable of accommodating business jets as well as routine general aviation traffic. In the year ending October 31, 2011, it recorded 28,650 aircraft operations, averaging 78 per day, with 41 aircraft then based there across single-engine, multi-engine, jet and helicopter types. More recently the airport has undergone a state-funded modernisation project, backed by New York State's Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition, aimed at improving facilities and supporting tourism and economic growth in the Catskill Region.

The Airfield Today

Today Sullivan County International Airport continues to handle predominantly general aviation traffic alongside a small proportion of air taxi operations, and its Part 139 certification and pavement design allow it to accommodate larger aircraft, including business jets, on a reserved basis. Hangar space is available for construction, and the airport has recently completed a significant modernisation of its facilities. Larger aircraft operators should expect that prior arrangement is required for reserved accommodation at the field.
