Montauk Airport (KMTP) is a small, privately owned but public-use airfield at the far eastern end of Long Island, New York, three nautical miles northeast of downtown Montauk. Built in 1957 to open up the East End to air access, it remains a seasonal general-aviation strip long associated with Hamptons weekend traffic and a scattering of celebrity visitors. For the VFR sim pilot it offers a short, lit runway with no instrument approach, uncontrolled airspace and a CTAF/Unicom-only radio environment.
Montauk Airport is a privately owned, public-use general-aviation field on the eastern tip of Long Island, serving the resort community of Montauk. It has no control tower and no instrument approach, making it a straightforward but weather-dependent VFR destination. The field is best known for its seasonal recreational and charter traffic and for a history of well-known visitors flying in for beach holidays and fishing trips.
The airport sits in uncontrolled Class G airspace typical of the outer reaches of Long Island, three nautical miles northeast of the Montauk business district in Suffolk County, New York. It is the easternmost airport in New York State, surrounded largely by open land and coastline rather than other aerodromes or significant controlled airspace.
Montauk has a single physical runway, 06/24, hard-surfaced and lit. The 06 threshold gives a landing distance of 2,938 ft, while the 24 threshold gives 2,582 ft. Field elevation is 3 ft, and there is no ILS or other precision approach available.
Traffic works on the Montauk CTAF/Unicom frequency of 122.7 MHz, with pilots expected to self-announce in the absence of any tower or approach control on the field itself. Overlying air traffic services are provided by New York Approach on 118.95 MHz and Providence Departure on 125.75 MHz. There is no ILS; a PAPI was installed in 2007 to give visual glidepath guidance, alongside an Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS) funded by FAA grants the same year.
No published circuit heights or noise-abatement procedures are available; pilots should expect a standard, self-announced uncontrolled-field pattern using the CTAF and remain alert for other traffic, particularly during the busy summer season.
Montauk Airport was conceived in 1957 by Perry Duryea Jr., a lobster wholesaler and New York State Assemblyman, to give the developing East End resort community better access by air. Duryea, a former Naval Air Transport Service pilot, kept his own twin-engine Apache, later an Aztec, in a hangar beside the runway and frequently flew it to Albany for legislative sessions. The field became a popular arrival point for pilots visiting nearby beaches and fishing grounds, and over the decades attracted a number of well-known visitors, including Mick Jagger, Bianca Jagger, Sarah Ferguson, Nicole Kidman, Robert De Niro, Jimmy Buffett, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and Lou Reed. Airport management passed from Bob King to Montauk-based charter pilot Lenny Dick, who ran the field until his death in 1994. In 2007 the airport received FAA grants to install an AWOS and a PAPI to aid pilots on approach.
Montauk Airport remains a privately operated, public-use field, attended seasonally from May to October between 0800 and sunset. Landings are managed through a reservation and automated landing-fee system, and prior permission is required before arrival. No fuel or additional facility details are published for the field.
