Point Mugu Naval Air Station, part of Naval Base Ventura County, sits on the California coast at Point Mugu and is one of the few civil-adjacent fields in the region with a runway long enough to handle almost any aircraft type. It is a US Navy installation with a full suite of military air traffic frequencies, an ILS-equipped main runway, and a shorter crosswind strip.

Overview

Point Mugu Naval Air Station, officially Naval Base Ventura County, is a US Navy airfield on the Pacific coast at Point Mugu, California. It is notable to a simulator pilot chiefly for its very long primary runway, 03/21, at over two miles in length, and for the ILS serving runway 21, both features more typical of a major military or transport hub than a small coastal field.

Airspace & Location

The field lies at coordinates 34.1193, -119.12 at an elevation of 10 feet, on the California coast at Point Mugu. The presence of dedicated tower, ground, clearance delivery, approach/departure and ATIS frequencies indicates that the airfield operates within controlled airspace, consistent with its status as an active naval air station.

Runways

Point Mugu has two physical runways. Runway 03/21 is 11,045 feet long with a hard surface, lit, and equipped with an ILS on the 21 approach. Runway 09/27 is 5,486 feet long, also hard-surfaced and lit.

Radio & Navigation

Radio services include Tower on 124.85 MHz, Approach/Departure on 128.65 MHz, ATIS on 125.55 MHz, Ground/Clearance Delivery on 121.6 MHz, and a coordination frequency (CLD) on 120.75 MHz. Additional military-related frequencies are listed, including MISC/ANG OPS on 30.56 MHz, Base Ops on 26.75 MHz, and PMSV Metro on 38.635 MHz. A Hawthorne radio outlet is also listed on 112.5 MHz.

The Airfield Today

Point Mugu functions as an active US Navy air station within Naval Base Ventura County, with a full complement of tower, approach, ground and base operations frequencies indicating ongoing military flying activity.
