Naval Air Station Oceana sits on the outskirts of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and is the US Navy's East Coast Master Jet Base, home to a large concentration of F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet squadrons. With four long hard-surfaced runways and constant high-tempo jet operations, it is one of the busiest and most operationally significant military airfields on the eastern seaboard, offering a striking contrast to civilian general aviation fields for the simulator pilot.
Oceana is a US Navy master jet base on the Virginia Beach oceanfront area, operating as the primary East Coast home for carrier-based strike-fighter squadrons. It is a heavily active military aerodrome rather than a civilian field, and its scale, traffic density and fast-jet character make it a distinctive destination for a simulator pilot interested in naval aviation operations.
The field lies within controlled airspace served by dedicated Approach and Departure Control facilities, reflecting its status as a high-tempo military jet base rather than a general aviation field. It is located in the Virginia Beach area of Virginia, close to the Atlantic coast, and forms part of a wider complex of Navy airfields in the Hampton Roads region, including a remote outlying field associated with Oceana located to the west near Chesapeake. Given its role as a master jet base, the surrounding area includes established Accident Potential Zones and land-use restrictions tied to its flight operations.
Oceana has four physical hard-surfaced runways, all lit. Runway 05R/23L is the longest, at 12,002 ft and 12,001 ft respectively. Runway 05L/23R measures 8,040 ft and 8,039 ft. Runway 14L/32R is 7,998 ft in both directions, and runway 14R/32L measures 7,991 ft and 7,992 ft. There is no ILS approach at the field. Field elevation is 16 ft.
Oceana Approach Control operates on 123.9 MHz, with Oceana Departure Control on 119.6 MHz. The tower callsign works on 127.075 MHz, with Ground on 33.64 MHz. ATIS is broadcast on 31.76 MHz, and Clearance Delivery is available on 25.44 MHz. Base Operations can be reached on 28.49 MHz, with a further operations/miscellaneous ATCOM channel on 672.3 MHz, and PMSV METRO weather service on 38.74 MHz.
Naval Air Station Oceana was commissioned on 17 August 1943 and initially operated as a Naval Auxiliary Air Station. On 1 April 1952, during the Korean War, the Secretary of the Navy redesignated it as a full Naval Air Station, and the Chief of Naval Operations approved its designation as an all-weather air station on 16 February 1954. Oceana has since grown into the Navy's East Coast Master Jet Base. During the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure process, the station faced a proposal to relocate its jet squadrons to Florida, prompted by concerns over incompatible residential development encroaching on its Accident Potential Zones; the City of Virginia Beach and neighbouring jurisdictions subsequently committed to land-use agreements to protect the base's long-term operations.
Oceana remains the Navy's East Coast Master Jet Base, supporting Atlantic and Pacific Fleet strike-fighter forces on roughly 5,916 acres. It is home to numerous F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet squadrons, including the large Fleet Replacement Squadron VFA-106, the adversary squadron VFC-12, and the logistics squadron VR-56, alongside technical training units supporting fleet maintenance. The base averages very high flight-operation volumes, with an aircraft taking off or landing roughly every two minutes during busy periods. As an active military installation, prior permission is required for any flight operations at the field.
