Oceanside Municipal Airport, also known as Bob Maxwell Field, is a small general aviation airport on the Southern California coast, sited close to the city of Oceanside in northern San Diego County. With a single asphalt runway and a laid-back general aviation atmosphere, it makes for a compact but useful VFR destination in busy SoCal airspace.
Oceanside Municipal Airport (ICAO: KOKB), also known as Bob Maxwell Memorial Field, is a public general aviation airport serving northern San Diego County. It is owned by the City of Oceanside and operated and managed by Airport Property Ventures. The field is small, covering only 43 acres, and is used mainly by light general aviation traffic, with services including transient parking, fuel, hangar rentals and occasional filming use.
The airport lies two miles northeast of downtown Oceanside, California, sandwiched between California State Route 76 and the San Luis Rey River bike path. It sits within the wider Southern California airspace environment, with San Diego area air traffic control services in the vicinity; the airport's operating frequencies show it working with SoCal Approach/Departure and San Diego Radio.
Oceanside has a single physical runway, 07/25, of asphalt construction with lighting. Runway 25 is listed at 3,034 feet and Runway 07 at 2,704 feet. There is no ILS at the field, and field elevation is 26 feet.
The airport uses UNICOM/CTAF on 123 MHz for local traffic advisories. SoCal Approach/Departure can be reached on 127.3 MHz, ASOS weather information is broadcast on 127.8 MHz, and San Diego Radio operates on 115.3 MHz. There is no published instrument approach at the field.
The airport is a useful visual landmark in its own right, lying between California State Route 76 to the north and the San Luis Rey River bike path, which runs along the airport's southern boundary. These two linear features, together with the nearby Oceanside coastline a short distance to the west, provide clear guidance for pilots inbound from the coast or following the SR-76 corridor inland.
The airport is named Bob Maxwell Memorial Field in honour of Bob Maxwell. It has long been operated by the City of Oceanside, with day-to-day management contracted to Airport Property Ventures. The FAA designator for the airport, OKB, differs from its IATA code OCN, the latter properly belonging to the Oceanside VORTAC located about four miles west-northwest of the airport, a point of frequent confusion given how closely the codes resemble one another.
Oceanside Municipal Airport remains an active general aviation field offering transient parking, aviation fuel, and hangar rentals, and it is also used from time to time for filming. The Oceanside Airport Association, based at the field, supports general aviation activity in the area, including flight scholarships and community programmes.
