Oelwein Municipal Airport is a small city-owned general aviation field a few miles west of Oelwein in northeast Iowa, offering a paved runway alongside a turf strip for light aircraft. It is an uncontrolled airfield typical of the region's municipal aerodromes, serving local flying, training and visiting traffic.

Overview

Oelwein Municipal Airport (KOLZ) is a small, city-owned general aviation airport serving the community of Oelwein in northeast Iowa. It provides hangars, tiedowns and rental facilities for local pilots, and its mix of a lit hard-surface runway and a shorter turf strip makes it a straightforward destination for light single-engine traffic and visiting VFR pilots.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies in uncontrolled airspace, about three miles west of the town of Oelwein, Iowa, at coordinates 42.6809, -91.9744 and an elevation of 1070 feet. The nearest significant terminal airspace and approach service is provided from Waterloo, whose approach and departure frequency is available for pilots operating in the area.

Runways

The airport has two physical runways. Runway 13/31 is 3,954 feet long with a hard surface and is lit, making it suitable for the majority of light aircraft operations by day or night. Runway 18/36 is a shorter, 1,821-foot grass strip, unlit, and better suited to lighter traffic in favourable conditions.

Radio & Navigation

Pilots should use the CTAF/UNICOM frequency of 122.8 MHz for airfield traffic. An AWOS-3 automated weather observation service is available on 119.675 MHz. An additional frequency of 118.9 MHz is listed for Waterloo approach/departure, useful for pilots requiring approach or departure services in the wider area. There is no ILS at the airport.

The Airfield Today

The airport is owned and operated by the City of Oelwein and is overseen by a local Airport Board. Facilities include hangars and tiedowns, with aircraft rental and parking available on the field. It functions as the general service airport for the Oelwein area, supporting local general aviation activity.
