St Clair County International Airport (KPHN) is a general aviation and corporate airport serving Port Huron, Michigan, sitting close to the US-Canada border near the St Clair River. It offers a crossed pair of hard-surfaced runways, an ILS approach, and full customs facilities for international arrivals, making it a useful and well-equipped stop for visiting simulator pilots.

Overview

St Clair County International Airport lies just southwest of Port Huron, Michigan, and functions as a general aviation, corporate and cargo field for the St Clair County area. Despite the "International" in its name, it has no scheduled airline service, but it is notable for offering round-the-clock customs clearance, reflecting its proximity to the Canadian border across the St Clair River. For a simulator pilot, the field offers an ILS-equipped main runway, a crossing secondary runway, and straightforward VFR access under uncontrolled airspace.

Airspace & Location

KPHN is located about five nautical miles southwest of Port Huron, Michigan, on roughly 1,135 acres of land near the towns of Kimball and Smiths Creek. Approach and departure services in the area are provided by Selfridge Approach/Departure; when Selfridge approach control is closed, Cleveland Air Route Traffic Control Center (ZOB) provides service via the Algonac RCAG on 126.525/285.525. The airport's location close to the international border with Canada means it handles customs clearance for arriving general aviation traffic.

Runways

The airport has two paved runways. Runway 04/22 is 5,065 feet long, hard-surfaced and lit, with an ILS approach available to Runway 04. Runway 10/28 is 3,954 feet long, also hard-surfaced and lit, but without an instrument approach.

Radio & Navigation

Selfridge Approach/Departure works the airport on 119.6 MHz. The automated weather observation system (AWOS-3) broadcasts on 118.375 MHz. UNICOM and the common traffic advisory frequency (CTAF) are combined on 123.05 MHz. An ILS is available for Runway 04.

The Airfield Today

St Clair County International Airport supports general aviation, corporate, cargo and medical flying activity. The field is served by an FBO, Aviation Express Inc, and provides pilot-controlled lighting along with its AWOS and ILS. It offers 24-hour customs clearance through US Customs and Border Protection and the Department of Agriculture for international arrivals, reflecting its role as a border-crossing point for general aviation traffic from Canada. An adjacent 80-acre business air industrial park supports aviation and related services on the airport property.
