Dallas Executive Airport, known by its ICAO code KRBD and formerly named Redbird Airport, is a general aviation field six miles southwest of Downtown Dallas in Dallas County, Texas. It functions as a reliever airport for Dallas Love Field and is owned and operated by the City of Dallas. The field is of particular interest to simulator pilots for its role as the national headquarters of the Commemorative Air Force, whose historic aircraft, including the B-29 Superfortress FIFI, have been based there.
The airport sits in Dallas County, Texas, approximately six miles (10 km) southwest of Downtown Dallas, and forms part of the general aviation infrastructure of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex alongside fields such as Dallas Love Field, Addison, and Dallas CBD.
Dallas Executive has two physical runways. Runway 13/31 is 6,032 ft in the 13 direction and 5,946 ft in the 31 direction, hard-surfaced and lit, with an ILS approach serving runway 31. Runway 17/35 is 3,767 ft in both directions, also hard-surfaced and lit. Field elevation is 653 ft.
Air traffic control operates the tower under the callsign Executive Tower, with the tower and CTAF frequency shared on 120.3 MHz and ground control on 121.7 MHz. The ATIS broadcasts on 126.35 MHz, clearance delivery is available on 118.625 MHz, and approach/departure services (RGNL APP/DEP) are provided on 125.2 MHz. UNICOM is on 122.95 MHz. An ILS approach is available for runway 31.
Redbird Airport was established in 1944 after the City of Dallas purchased roughly 1,026 acres to meet the general aviation needs of southwest Dallas. The airport was renamed Dallas Executive Airport, effective May 1, 2002. It briefly hosted scheduled commercial service in 2011, when Corporate Flight Management operated flights to Branson, Missouri as Branson Air Express using British Aerospace Jetstream 41 aircraft. In 2013 the Commemorative Air Force announced plans to build a National Airbase at the field, relocating its headquarters and main museum from Midland, and it duly established its headquarters there in 2016, occupying a hangar on the southeast side of the airfield. Runway improvement work took place in 2017, with further work in 2018 extending runway 13/31 to bring safety areas and protection zones onto airport property. On November 12, 2022, a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and a Bell P-63 Kingcobra collided in mid-air during the Wings Over Dallas air show at the field, killing all six occupants of the two aircraft.
Dallas Executive Airport continues to operate as a general aviation reliever for Dallas Love Field and hosts the Commemorative Air Force's National Airbase, headquarters and aircraft collection, including the B-29 Superfortress FIFI at the Victor N. Agather Hangar. The Dallas Police Department also operates helicopters from the airport, and the site includes the Dallas Vertiport, a dual-deck public-use facility with capacity for three helicopters and five parking spaces across two vertical pads. The airport markets itself to corporate and business general aviation with associated ground facilities.
