Roberts Field (KRDM) serves Redmond and nearby Bend in Central Oregon, and is the region's principal commercial airport as well as a base for aerial firefighting and general aviation training. With two long paved runways, full ILS approach capability and a control tower, it offers straightforward access for both airline traffic and visiting light aircraft.
Roberts Field, officially Redmond Municipal Airport, lies at Redmond, Oregon, and is owned and operated by the City of Redmond. It is the main airline gateway for Central Oregon, handling scheduled services to several western US hub cities, and it also hosts the Lancair aircraft factory, a US Forest Service air tanker and smokejumper base, and flight training operations. For a visiting VFR or IFR pilot it combines airline-scale infrastructure with genuine general aviation activity, making it an interesting and well-equipped Central Oregon destination.
The airport sits at Redmond, Oregon, within Central Oregon, and is the primary airfield serving both Redmond and the larger town of Bend nearby. It is a towered field, with Redmond Tower providing air traffic control and Seattle Center handling the surrounding en-route airspace on 128.15 MHz.
Roberts Field has two paved runway pairs. Runway 11/29 is 7,023 feet long, hard-surfaced and lit. Runway 05/23 is 7,016 feet long, also hard-surfaced and lit, with runway 23 equipped with an ILS approach. Field elevation is 3,061 feet.
Redmond Tower operates on 124.5 MHz, which also serves as the CTAF. Ground control is on 121.8 MHz, and UNICOM is available on 122.95 MHz. The field ASOS broadcasts on 119.025 MHz. Seattle Center provides overlying en-route radar service on 128.15 MHz. An ILS is available for runway 23.
Roberts Field was built in the 1920s, with passenger flights first arriving in 1940. During the Second World War the airfield was used by the United States Army Air Forces as a bomber base, and after the war the federal government sold the airport to the city of Redmond for one dollar. In the postwar decades it saw a succession of airline operators, beginning with United Airlines Douglas DC-3 services in 1947 and continuing through West Coast Airlines, Hughes Airwest, Republic Airlines and later carriers including Horizon Air, Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Air, Delta Connection and United Express, reflecting the airfield's steady growth as Central Oregon's principal commercial airport.
Roberts Field is today the main commercial service airport for Central Oregon, with airline flights operated by Alaska, American, Breeze Airways, Delta and United to hubs such as Denver, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Portland, Salt Lake City and San Diego. Alongside airline operations, the airport is home to the Lancair aircraft factory, the US Forest Service Redmond Air Center supporting regional firefighting and smokejumper operations, the Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center, Hillsboro Aero Academy flight training, and Leading Edge Jet Center as a fixed-base operator.
