Central Wyoming Regional Airport (KRIW) lies three miles northwest of Riverton in Fremont County, Wyoming, serving the town and nearby Lander with a single United Express airline connection to Denver alongside a healthy general aviation population. It is an uncontrolled field with two lit hard-surface runways, one long enough for regional jets, and an ILS approach to Runway 28.

Overview

Central Wyoming Regional Airport, known until 2020 as Riverton Regional Airport, is a city-owned public airport serving Riverton, Wyoming, and the nearby town of Lander. It combines a single scheduled airline service, operated as United Express by SkyWest to Denver, with a substantial general aviation presence, making it a useful and welcoming stop for visiting sim pilots exploring central Wyoming.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits about three miles northwest of Riverton, in Fremont County, Wyoming. It is an uncontrolled airport with no operating control tower, so pilots coordinate their own traffic sequencing on the common frequency.

Runways

KRIW has two physical runways. Runway 10/28 is 8,179 feet long, hard-surfaced and lit, with an ILS serving Runway 28. Runway 01/19 is 4,796 feet long, also hard-surfaced and lit. Field elevation is 5,472 feet.

Radio & Navigation

Weather is available on the ASOS at 121.425 MHz. A remote outlet (RDO) for Casper Radio can be reached on 122.2 MHz. Common traffic advisory and unicom services are provided on 122.8 MHz, which also serves as the CTAF/UNICOM frequency for self-announced traffic coordination given the absence of a tower. Runway 28 is equipped with an ILS for instrument approaches.

Joining & Circuit Procedures

As an uncontrolled airport, KRIW requires pilots to self-announce position and intentions on the CTAF and to see and avoid other traffic when joining the pattern or operating in the vicinity of the field.

History

The airport has a long history of scheduled airline service dating back to the original Frontier Airlines, whose Douglas DC-3s connected Riverton to Denver, Salt Lake City, Billings, Casper and Cheyenne from 1950. Frontier upgraded to Convair 580s by 1964 and introduced Boeing 737-200 jet service in 1979, making it the only carrier to bring mainline jets to the field, before withdrawing by 1985. Service continued through a succession of regional carriers operating as Continental Express and later United Express, including Pioneer Airlines, Rocky Mountain Airways, GP Express Airlines, Mesa Airlines and Great Lakes Airlines, the last of which introduced larger Embraer EMB-120 Brasilia aircraft in 2016 shortly before ceasing operations. Key Lime Air, operating as Denver Air Connection, began regional jet service in July 2016, and SkyWest Airlines took over the subsidized United Express contract to Denver in January 2020. The airport was renamed from Riverton Regional Airport to Central Wyoming Regional Airport in 2020.

The Airfield Today

Today the airport continues to host United Express service to Denver, operated by SkyWest, alongside an active general aviation community. In 2018 the field recorded around 4,547 aircraft operations, roughly 78 percent general aviation and 22 percent air taxi, with 37 aircraft then based on the field, predominantly single-engine types along with some multi-engine aircraft and helicopters.
