Renton Municipal Airport, also known as Clayton Scott Field, is a busy general aviation reliever field on the southern shore of Lake Washington, about twelve miles southeast of downtown Seattle. It sits immediately alongside the Boeing Renton Factory, from which newly built 737s taxi for their first flights, giving the field a distinctive industrial backdrop for visiting pilots.

Overview

Renton Municipal Airport, renamed Clayton Scott Field in 2005 in honour of the veteran aviator's hundredth birthday, is a city-owned general aviation airport serving Renton, Washington, and the surrounding communities south of Seattle. It functions as a regional reliever airport within the FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems and supports air charter, air taxi, corporate and recreational flying. The airport is closely associated with Boeing, whose Renton factory sits adjacent to the field and uses it as the departure point for new-build 737 aircraft, making it a field of particular interest to sim pilots wanting an authentic slice of Pacific Northwest general aviation and airliner production traffic.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies approximately twelve miles southeast of downtown Seattle, near the southern end of Lake Washington, with the lake itself forming the field's northern boundary. Seattle Approach and Departure can be reached on 119.2 MHz for traffic in the surrounding airspace. The field adjoins the Will Rogers-Wiley Post Memorial Seaplane Base on Lake Washington, and the Boeing Renton Factory sits immediately to the west of the runway.

Runways

The airport has a single physical runway, 16/34, of hard surface construction and lit for night operations. The runway measures 5,076 feet in the 16 direction and 5,040 feet in the 34 direction.

Radio & Navigation

Renton Tower operates on 124.7 MHz, which also serves as the CTAF. Ground control is on 121.6 MHz, ATIS broadcasts on 126.95 MHz, and UNICOM is available on 122.85 MHz. Seattle Approach/Departure can be contacted on 119.2 MHz. The airport has no published instrument landing system.

Joining & Circuit Procedures

The airport uses Pilot Controlled Lighting, allowing pilots to activate the runway lighting system by radio when approaching after dark or in low light.

Visual Reference Points

Lake Washington forms an unmistakable landmark along the airport's northern boundary, with the Will Rogers-Wiley Post Memorial Seaplane Base situated on its shore. The large Boeing Renton Factory buildings, immediately adjacent to the runway, are a prominent visual reference for pilots inbound from the Seattle area, and newly completed 737 airframes can often be seen on the airport ramp awaiting their first flights.

History

The airport was renamed Clayton Scott Field in 2005 to mark the hundredth birthday of Clayton Scott, a long-serving Renton aviator and business owner who had once served as Bill Boeing's personal pilot. Pathfinder Park, at the main Airport Way entrance, is dedicated to his memory. The single runway was formerly designated 15/33 before being resurfaced and realigned in August 2009, after which it became today's 16/34. The airport's proximity to the Boeing Renton Factory, which has produced 737s and formerly 757s, has long tied its operations closely to airliner manufacturing, with new aircraft departing from the field for their first flights.

The Airfield Today

Renton Municipal Airport remains an active general aviation field owned by the City of Renton, handling well over a hundred thousand aircraft operations a year, the great majority general aviation traffic alongside a small proportion of air taxi, scheduled commercial and military movements. Based aircraft include single and multi-engine airplanes, jets and helicopters. The field offers floatplane haul-out services and a launching ramp for converting between wheeled and water operations, and United States Customs service is available for both floatplane and wheeled arrivals by water or by land. Airframe and engine maintenance is available through the airport's fixed-base operators.
