North Central State Airport (KSFZ) is a state-owned general aviation airport in Providence County, Rhode Island, serving as a reliever field for the northern Providence metropolitan area. Located in the towns of Smithfield and Lincoln, it offers a full-service FBO, an instrument approach, and two runways suitable for light and business aircraft. It is a useful VFR destination for pilots wanting to avoid the busier Class C environment of T.F. Green while still being close to Providence.

Overview

North Central State Airport is a public-use airport owned by the State of Rhode Island, situated in the towns of Smithfield and Lincoln in Providence County. It functions as a general aviation reliever for T.F. Green Airport and serves the northern portion of the Providence metropolitan area. The field supports corporate and recreational flying, with a resident FBO, flight training operations, and maintenance facilities, making it a practical and interesting stop for simulator pilots exploring the Providence area.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies roughly 3 nautical miles east of the Smithfield central business district, spanning the boundary between Smithfield and Lincoln, and about three miles from Pawtucket. It sits within the wider Providence terminal area, with Providence Approach/Departure providing service on 135.4 MHz. The field covers approximately 475 acres and is one of six airports operated by the Rhode Island Airport Corporation, alongside T.F. Green.

Runways

North Central State Airport has two physical runways. Runway 05/23 is 4,999 feet long with a hard, lit surface and is equipped with an instrument landing system on runway 05. Runway 15/33 is 3,209 feet long, also hard-surfaced and lit, but without an ILS.

Radio & Navigation

Providence Approach/Departure can be reached on 135.4 MHz for arriving and departing traffic. Weather information is available via AWOS-3 on 120.025 MHz. Clearance delivery is provided on 124.35 MHz, and the common traffic advisory frequency and UNICOM are combined on 123.075 MHz. Runway 05 is served by a non-precision instrument landing system.

Visual Reference Points

The airport is bordered by several business and industrial parks in the Smithfield area, which can assist pilots in visually locating the field when approaching from the surrounding Providence metropolitan area.

History

North Central State Airport opened for service in 1951 and has been owned and operated by the State of Rhode Island since its inception. It was established to serve the northern part of the Providence metropolitan area and continues to act as a designated reliever airport for general aviation traffic diverted from the busier T.F. Green Airport. It is one of six airports operated by the Rhode Island Airport Corporation. As with other state-owned airports in Rhode Island, a landing fee applies to aircraft not registered within the state. The airport is not equipped to handle large airliners, and any such use is strictly emergency-related.

The Airfield Today

FlightLevel Aviation operates as the airport's fixed base operator, offering full-service avgas (100LL) and jet fuel, aircraft parking for types up to a Gulfstream 450, towing, de-icing, heated hangar storage, and a pilot's lounge, with published business hours of 0800 to 1800 and outside-hours service available on request. The field hosts 37 privately owned tenants, including Air Ventures Flight School and North Central Flight Center for flight training, New England Aviation and RI Aviation for aircraft maintenance, and Boston Skydive Center. A non-precision instrument landing system is maintained by the FAA. Hangar space is limited, with a waitlist currently in place for prospective tenants.
