Shreveport Regional Airport (KSHV) is a public-use, medium-hub commercial airport serving Shreveport and Bossier City, Louisiana, operated by the Shreveport Airport Authority under charter from the City of Shreveport. It replaced the older Shreveport Downtown Airport, whose growth was constrained by its proximity to the Red River, and today handles a mix of airline, cargo and general aviation traffic. For a sim pilot, it offers long, well-lit runways with ILS guidance and a Class C environment, making it a good training ground for handling airline-style radio work and approach procedures.
The airport sits within Class C airspace and lies about four nautical miles southwest of Shreveport's central business district, with its runways and terminal visible from Interstate 20, one of the main east-west highway corridors of the Southern United States. The field is served by an approach and departure control frequency alongside its own tower, reflecting its status as a controlled commercial field.
Shreveport Regional has two physical runways. Runway 14/32 is the longer of the pair, with 14 measuring 8,348 feet and 32 measuring 7,973 feet, both hard-surfaced, lit and equipped with ILS. Runway 06/24 is 6,198 feet in both directions, also hard-surfaced and lit, with runway 06 additionally equipped with ILS.
Pilots should expect to work Approach/Departure on 119.9 MHz, with ATIS broadcasting on 128.45 MHz. Clearance delivery and ground operations are handled on 121.9 MHz, with the tower on 121.4 MHz. A CLD frequency of 124.65 MHz is also listed. For non-towered or advisory use, UNICOM operates on 122.95 MHz. Instrument approaches are available, with ILS serving runways 14, 32 and 06.
The airport's runways and terminal buildings are readily visible from Interstate 20, which runs along the airport's edge and serves as a useful landmark for pilots orienting themselves on approach. The field lies roughly four nautical miles southwest of downtown Shreveport, providing a clear reference point relative to the city centre.
Shreveport Regional was built to replace the constrained Shreveport Downtown Airport and grew into a significant hub for mainline jet service through the 1970s and 1980s. Delta Air Lines operated it as a focus city, running as many as thirty-three daily flights with Boeing 727-200 and McDonnell Douglas DC-9-30 aircraft in the mid-1970s, with nonstop service extending to cities including Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, Memphis and New Orleans. Northwest Airlines, Trans World Airlines, the original Braniff International, the original Frontier Airlines, Texas International Airlines, American Airlines and Continental Airlines all served the field at various times with jet equipment. The now-defunct regional carrier Royale Airlines was based at Shreveport Regional from 1962 until 1989, flying turboprops and DC-9 jets to 23 cities across Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi and Florida. Shreveport Public Works Commissioner H. Lane Mitchell was a major figure in campaigning for the airport's location on Hollywood Avenue.
The airport continues to handle scheduled airline service alongside a substantial cargo operation, anchored by a $30 million cargo terminal opened in 2009 with tenants including United Parcel Service, FedEx, Integrated Airline Solutions, USA Jet and Empire Airlines. It also serves as a maintenance base, with Western Global Airlines establishing a consolidated maintenance centre at the field in 2018 for its Boeing 747 and McDonnell Douglas MD-11 fleet. The airport additionally functions as an alternate diversion field for American Airlines and United Airlines flights unable to land at Dallas-Fort Worth or Houston Intercontinental due to weather.
