Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport (KSJC) sits in the heart of Silicon Valley, three miles northwest of downtown San Jose, offering a busy Class C environment with two parallel runways beneath the San Francisco Class B shelf. It combines significant air carrier traffic with a sizable general and corporate aviation presence, making it an interesting and demanding destination for simulator pilots working the Bay Area.

Overview

Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport, known to pilots as San Jose International or by its ICAO code KSJC, is a city-owned public airport serving San Jose, California, and the wider Santa Clara Valley region of the Bay Area. It is a multi-use field: predominantly an air carrier airport, with air carrier facilities on the east side of the runways, but it also hosts a sizable general and corporate aviation presence on the west side. For a simulator pilot, KSJC offers the appeal of flying into a major Class C airport tucked directly beneath San Francisco's Class B airspace, with parallel runway operations and a busy mix of airline and business traffic.

Airspace & Location

KSJC lies within Class C airspace and sits directly beneath the Class B airspace associated with San Francisco International Airport, so pilots must plan transitions carefully when operating in this part of the Bay Area. The airport is located about three miles northwest of Downtown San Jose, close to Santa Clara, and near the US-101 and I-880 corridors. Reid-Hillview Airport (KRHV), a smaller general aviation field, lies to the southeast of San Jose and should be noted during pre-flight planning given its proximity, along with other airports and charted reporting points in the vicinity.

Runways

KSJC has two parallel physical runways. Runway 12R/30L is 9,694 ft long with a hard surface, lit, and equipped with an ILS. Runway 12L/30R is 8,454 ft long, also hard-surfaced and lit, but without an ILS. The configuration consists of closely spaced parallel runways, with 12L/30R and 12R/30L operating in tandem.

Radio & Navigation

KSJC is served by NorCal Approach on 33.82 MHz and 120.1 MHz, with NorCal Departure on 121.3 MHz. The ATIS broadcasts on 126.95 MHz, clearance delivery is available on 118 MHz, ground control operates on 121.7 MHz, and the tower and CTAF both use 124 MHz. An ILS is available for the main runway, 12R/30L.

History

San Jose's airport traces its commercial origins to private aviation development on land purchased in 1945 by James M. Nissen, who went on to become the airport's first manager after the City of San Jose decided to develop the field; Terminal B is dedicated to his memory. The airport held its dedication ceremonies on February 1, 1949, when it welcomed its first commercial flight, a Southwest Airways DC-3 carrying two pilots, seven passengers, and a cargo of 2,550 baby chickens, with only the chickens disembarking in San Jose. In November 2001, the airport was renamed in honour of Norman Y. Mineta, a native of San Jose who had served as the city's mayor, as a congressman, and later as both United States Secretary of Commerce and United States Secretary of Transportation; that same month the San Jose City Council approved an amended master plan calling for a three-phase, nine-year expansion programme.

The Airfield Today

Today KSJC remains a multi-use airport, handling substantial air carrier traffic while also supporting a sizable general and corporate aviation community, with corporate and GA operations concentrated on the west side of the runways opposite the airline facilities to the east. It ranks as the Bay Area's second-busiest airport by passenger boardings, behind San Francisco International, and continues to serve as a key gateway for the Silicon Valley region.
